Personalization Add "Open in Terminal (Admin)" context menu in Windows 11

Windows_Terminal_Admin_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove a Open in Terminal (Admin) context menu for all users in Windows 11.

Windows Terminal is a modern host application for the command-line shells you already love, like Command Prompt, PowerShell, and bash (via Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)). Its main features include multiple tabs, panes, Unicode and UTF-8 character support, a GPU accelerated text rendering engine, and the ability to create your own themes and customize text, colors, backgrounds, and shortcuts.

Windows 11 includes a Open in Terminal context menu by default when you right click or shift + right click on a folder or folder background, but this does not open Windows Terminal elevated (run as administrator).

The Open in Terminal (Admin) context menu will allow you to select to open an elevated Windows Terminal to the current folder path with the default profile, Command Prompt shell profile, or Windows PowerShell shell profile.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add, remove, and use the "Open in Terminal (Admin)" context menu.

EXAMPLE: "Open in Terminal (Admin)" context menu

You will need to click/tap on Show more options first by default, then click/tap on Open in Terminal (Admin).

Show_more_options.webp
Open_in_Terminal_Admin_context_menu.webp
Expandable_Open_in_Terminal_Admin_context_menu.webp

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (add-expandable), step 3 (add), or step 4 (add) below for what you would like to do.

2 Add Expandable Right Click "Open in Terminal (Admin)" Context Menu

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Add_expandable_Open_in_Terminal_admin

If you installed PowerShell 7 and would like to add it to this context menu, then you can download and merge the Add_PowerShell_7_as_admin.reg file below afterwards.

Download

If you installed Ubuntu for WSL and would like to add Ubuntu to this context menu, then you can download and merge the Add_Ubuntu_as_admin.reg file below afterwards.

I hate to trouble you further, but I thought I would report back...

Default profile goes to Powershell 7.3.1 as admin on the desktop where I clicked (as I have it installed.)
Command Prompt goes to command prompt as admin on the desktop where I clicked.
Ubuntu goes to Powershell 7.3.1 as admin on the desktop where I clicked. Not to Ubuntu.

To clarify, I only used:
Add_Open_in_Windows_Terminal_as_administrator.reg
and
Add_Ubuntu_as_admin.reg
as adding the PowerShell 7 entry would be redundant since PowerShell 7.3.1 is my "Default Profile"

I hope not to be too much of an inconvenience. Maybe it can't work, but this is progress.

Odd. This is what I see:

Just to verify, did you install the Ubuntu below:

Uhm no, now that you mention it, that is not the package I had installed, same version just a different app from the app store. So thanks a lot for that. The only challenge I had after installing the right package was the shell opening up on the desktop and not in the root of my Ubuntu install. - It would do no good to open the bash shell over the desktop that I can see - let me know if I am missing something there. So I tried to set the starting directory in the settings.json file with "startingDirectory": "\\\\wsl.localhost\\Ubuntu" and it didn't do anything - still opens wherever you clicked it from . - it works without escapement in explorer.

I mean I entered "explorer.exe ." after I had "cd /" from the bash shell that opened on the desktop and got the "\\wsl.localhost\Ubuntu" and escaped it and added it to the settings.json where the Ubuntu entry was but it still opened on the desktop or wherever I clicked at.

So the only thing I could think to do is go to "\\wsl.localhost\Ubuntu\home\wire" (wire is my username) and open the .bashrc and put "cd /" at the bottom of the file and it now goes to the root directory in Ubuntu when I open it on the desktop just like clicking the app.

Have I made this too hard, or missed the point entirely? Seems like the registry edits worked right out of the box for you. And I thought they would once I had the right Ubuntu package installed. I know this probably doesn't really fit in this topic anymore, but can you shed any light on the topics of

A) why doesn't the "startingDirectory": "\\\\wsl.localhost\\Ubuntu" work in the settings.json and

B) Why am I having to take these extra steps, did you have to modify stuff? Do you have your Linux shell just opening on the desktop or wherever it is clicked and that has some function? Your image didn't look like that was the case.

Sorry for all the trouble, I think maybe I just don't understand things properly.

It should open to whatever directly from the context menu.

Not sure about the json file. Never really messed with it.

Is there a little error in Add_Shift+Open_in_Windows_Terminal_as_administrator.reg? The second "Extended"= should also be "Extended"="" to hide the menu without shift+click also on the background.

Hello mate, :-)

You could use this below instead to do so:

Code:

Hi,
Would that edit the existing reg used or do I need to remove the existing and do this one ?

You would need to remove the old context menu first, then add this custom one.

It will directly "Open Windows Terminal (Admin)" using your default profile.

Also, I just noticed that in "Add_Open_in_Windows_Terminal_as_administrator.reg" (step 3), the command for when you click on a directory's background is missing so when you click on it, nothing happens.

Based on the other reg file, there should probably be the following line at the end:
@="powershell.exe -WindowStyle Hidden \"Start-Process -Verb RunAs cmd.exe -ArgumentList @('/c','start wt.exe','-d','\"\"\"%V\\.\"\"\"')\""
