Personalization Add or Remove Default Shortcuts on Win+X Quick Link Menu in Windows 11

  • Staff
Start.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove default shortcuts on the Win+X Quick Link menu for your account in Windows 11.

The Win+X Quick Link menu (aka: Power User menu) is a pop-up menu from the Start button that includes shortcuts of common management, configuration, and other power user tools for Windows.

The shortcuts on the Win+X Quick Link menu are broken up into 3 groups. Group1 shortcuts in the bottom section, Group2 shortcuts in the middle section, and Group3 shortcuts in the top section.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22579, Windows Terminal and Windows Terminal (Admin) in the Win+X menu has been replaced by Windows PowerShell and Windows PowerShell (Admin). If you have Windows Terminal installed and would like Windows PowerShell to open in Windows Terminal, set Windows Terminal as your default terminal app.

I know, but when I deleted some of the links in there and restarted Explorer it worked. :D

I tested removing "Task Manager" from the "Default" Group2 and restarted explorer process, but it didn't remove it from my Win+X menu.

I'm thinking something else may be at hand here if your Win+X is using the "Default" location at all.

hmm... maybe a coincidence... After the update, it added the old defaults back into the menu and after verifying the folder didn't have the links I restarted explorer twice and they were still there. They did disappear after messing with the default folder, but I made it match what I had so maybe it was just the random third restart of explorer?

--Edit--
Maybe it's to do with the version of Windows? For a test, I opened both locations and compared the two folders, I had Power Options in Default but not in my user folder, it was in the menu. I deleted it from default and restarted explorer and it removed it.

@BakRest Ignore my comment about the WinAero app, they haven't updated it yet and you were correct, the Win+X Menu did change in the latest update.

It appears it takes the links from:
Code:
C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\
before checking
Code:
%LocalAppdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WinX
to add any remaining links.

I can confirm if you removed any items that returned, you can remove them from the Default profile and it will remove them again.

This is the only way that works. I was able to remove all links that (to me) are making this menu overcrowded with unnecessary links.

Apparently the new file location is now: C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\

Thanks you for sharing.

It'll be interesting to hear what others are seeing. Nothing I delete from this location affects the current user for me. Normally, that location is only used to apply to new accounts when they get created. :boom:

It maybe noteworthy to say that I run Windows 11 Pro with a Local Account. My Windows 11 OS is not signed-in with my Microsoft account.

But with the deletion of shortcuts, I reduced my overcrowded Win+X menu. I'm happy with the result, applied to 3 laptops.

Thanks and credit for this, go to: Archigos

@Archigos - wanted to say thanks for posting the tidbit about the new C:\Users\Default\...\WinX involvement in Win11 ... i've been hacking my winx menus for a few years with my own scripts and this initially threw me when i went to run them and there were still old entries showing ... sure enough they were all in that new location and whacking that additional Group3 folder there (and of course recycling explorer.exe) definitely did the trick for me as well, so thanks.

you guys are all over this stuff already but i'll go ahead and share my scripts for maintaining this menu in case anybody is interested:
Scripted Windows 10 "Win+X" Menu (aka "Power User Menu")

the scripts are separated into individual routine files to be more "mix and match" but the main easy one to run is "!RefreshWinX.cmd"

the gist is i keep my favorites in a file (favorites.md) and the scripts just blow away group3 and recreate it with my favorites... this way i can readily set that menu up when i fire up a new windows install or hop onto a new machine. Full disclosure, i just reverse gen'd what the Winaero tool did to create the magic hashlinks and put that into a script so it was more visible/sharable/portable.

gee i just remembered, this depends on "scriptcs" (Script C# runner), so you'd have to install that... i kinda figure all the other winx githubbers out there are already doing a better job at something more polished... if anybody is actually interested, i could rewrite this stuff to be more consolidated into a single powershell file... at the time csx had just come out and this was my excuse to check its angles but powershell core with embedded C# is where it's at for me now.

happy winx hacking everybody! =)

Tried What was detailed but after restarting explorer to take effect the Windows Terminal link in the folder group 3 disappeared.

But I came up with a solution that worked and brought back the Windows Terminal and Windows Terminal Admin, by copying the existing content from the group 3 folder from Default user folder C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group3 to the current user folder C:\Users\Chayi\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group3 including the desktop.ini file and it solved the problem.

I used the method in Option 2 to restore the default WinX menu entries. I unzipped the file mentioned and copied all the Group3 entries from the unzipped file to the Default Group3 folder and the user Group3 folder. After restarting Windows Explorer there were still no entries for Terminal, Powershell or Command window. Same after logging out and back in again. This is running Windows 11 Pro 22H2. I have wasted hours already trying to get this sorted (also custom entries in the Group3 folder do not appear as expected )

Hello Paul, :alien:

As a test, make sure the shortcuts are in both the current user and new users locations to see if that may help.

Odd. Does it work for a new account?

If so, you could try copying them from the new account to your account.

No, it doesn't. I created a new local account first as a standard user and then as Administrator. In neither case does Terminal or Powershell (or Command Prompt) appear in the WinX right-click menu. I am of the opinion that the WinX functionality in Windows 11 is simply broken - and googling seems to suggest that others are of the same opinion.
Maybe by the time MS is ready to release Windows 12 they might have sorted out Window 11 ...

But, in the meantime, my WinX menu does not have any options for Terminal, Powershell or Command prompt and there seems to be no way of getting them back (short of reinstalling Windows ...HaHa)

You could try doing a repair install of Windows 11 below to hopefully restore them without losing anything.
