Personalization Add or Remove Default Shortcuts on Win+X Quick Link Menu in Windows 11

  • Staff
Start.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove default shortcuts on the Win+X Quick Link menu for your account in Windows 11.

The Win+X Quick Link menu (aka: Power User menu) is a pop-up menu from the Start button that includes shortcuts of common management, configuration, and other power user tools for Windows.

The shortcuts on the Win+X Quick Link menu are broken up into 3 groups. Group1 shortcuts in the bottom section, Group2 shortcuts in the middle section, and Group3 shortcuts in the top section.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22579, Windows Terminal and Windows Terminal (Admin) in the Win+X menu has been replaced by Windows PowerShell and Windows PowerShell (Admin). If you have Windows Terminal installed and would like Windows PowerShell to open in Windows Terminal, set Windows Terminal as your default terminal app.

Thanks for this procedure.
Following the instructions I could fix the missing System quick link from my Windows 11 22000.258 Win + X menu.
It was missing on all the machines that were upgraded from Windows 10 21H1 to Windows 11 build 22000.xxx.
I just copied the shortcut 06-SystemAbout provided in the zip file and replaced the one in Group3 that was not working.

Hi Shawn,

Thankyou so much for this tip, I have another query, How to edit the right click context menu "Open with windows terminal" and change it to "Open with command prompt" ?

I have searched the net and found that the registry entry for this is

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background

and

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

But there are multiple entries with powershell and cmd and I really dont want to make mistakes in there...Could you kindly help me get the default command prompt instead of terminal window? Thanks...

Hello Joseph, :-)

If you like, you can use the method in the tutorial below to change the default profile in Windows Terminal so it opens to the Command Prompt by default instead of Windows PowerShell.

Hello Joseph, :)

If you like, you can use the method in the tutorial below to change the default profile in Windows Terminal so it opens to the Command Prompt by default instead of Windows PowerShell.

Hi Shawn, Yes I have already seen that thread since I have posted the same question over there too after an answer, Also I have changed the default profile to "command prompt" as you mentioned,

Maybe I should elaborate my question clearly, I just want to know if there is a chance to change the context name to "Open with command prompt" instead of "terminal" since Ive got used to the word command prompt for a long time :)

You could remove the Open in Windows Terminal context menu below.

....then add a Open command window here and/or Open command window here as administrator context menu(s).

Wow, You have an immediate answer for every question...Phenomenal...(y)

Also back to this current thread, I have added a "command prompt" shortcut inside the "group 3" folder but I couldn't see it when i right click on start menu..I logged off and checked, Can we only delete those shortcuts ? no editing or adding new shortcuts?

Yeah Since they have the "windows terminal" they should have thought no way for cmd prompt..:p

Also I found a specific tool for this

In that tool there is an option to add a program..when I copy the "cmd.exe" from system32 to other folders like desktop it works, but when i tried to add the shortcut for cmd its not working...Anyways its better to leave at it...

When following the tutorial here ^ I wanted to point out, if you copy existing shortcuts instead of making fresh ones... if there is ANYTHING in the comments field, that's what will show up in the Win+X Menu. I didn't realize it and clearing the comment and re-hashing the link worked fine to fix it, but just thought I'd point this out.

With the latest Windows 11 Update, this no longer works.
All Default folder shotcuts no longer appear in any of the: %LocalAppdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WinX folder.

Anyone know how to fix this? Because now the WinX folder is overcrowded with shortcuts in my opinion.
And I would love to remove most of them.

The Win+X Menu Editor from WinAero still works, don't be fooled, the link says for Windows 8 and Windows 10, but has no problem working correctly on Windows 11.

Scroll about halfway or so down the page to find it.

Hello mate, :-)

You could use the option 2 in this tutorial to download and add the default Win+X shortcuts you want back, and use option 1 to remove any you don't want.

I will try the second option tomorrow. I don’t like 3th party software.
So the trick from Winaero is (for me) not my preference.

@BakRest Ignore my comment about the WinAero app, they haven't updated it yet and you were correct, the Win+X Menu did change in the latest update.

It appears it takes the links from:
Code:
C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\
before checking
Code:
%LocalAppdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WinX
to add any remaining links.

I can confirm if you removed any items that returned, you can remove them from the Default profile and it will remove them again.

Interesting. Usually the "Default" location is used to apply to new accounts.

I know, but when I deleted some of the links in there and restarted Explorer it worked. :D
