Personalization Add or Remove F Drive in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

  • Staff
Drive_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the F: Drive in the navigation pane of File Explorer for your account in Windows 11.

All drives are shown under the This PC group in the navigation pane of File Explorer by default.

Removable drives are shown as separate groups in the navigation pane of File Explorer by default in addition to being shown under the This PC group in the navigation pane.

You could Pin to Quick access any drive to have it under the Home group in the navigation pane.

If you like, you can add the F: Drive as its own separate group to the top or bottom of the navigation pane of File Explorer for even easier and faster access.

EXAMPLE: "F: Drive" at top or bottom of navigation pane in File Explorer

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (add top), step 3 (add bottom), or step 4 (remove) below for what you want.

2 Add F Drive to Top of Navigation Pane in File Explorer

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Add_F_Drive_to_top_of_navigation_pane_of_File_Explorer.reg

If wanted, you can edit the REG file below to change the drive name in red for the @="F: Drive" lines to whatever name you want to show in the navigation pane.

Thank you so much!

though it looks like this one may not have worked as easily as the first... I'm sorry! It has disappeared properly from a regular Explorer window, but for some reason, why I am navigating through a window that was opened through a "Browse for the file" style of prompt, it still shows up.
1696797127259.png

That prompt was from when I had opened Steam and clicked "browse for the file" as an example to take this screenshot.

But if I just open up an explorer window from the taskbar, for example, I get it like this. which is the intended behavior.

Thanks again for any help you can provide! It really is crazy that this functionality isn't just built into the OS to customize what I want to put on the side...

@Durkbeef,

The drive should show up in the browse type windows as well.

If you mean it being expanded, then it should open the same way as last closed. Collapsing the drive in the navigation pane and closing the window should have it open collapsed next time as well.

Thanks again for your response!

I don't mean the collapsed part is the behavior that I am looking for though. apologies for the miscomunnication!

If you you look in the top screenshot, there is still a listing for the F: drive in the navigation pane when opening a "browse for file" window.

In the bottom screenshot though, there is ONLY a listing for My Computer, which is what I am trying to achieve if possible. What's strange is that the script for deleting the D: drive worked for it perfectly.

Ah, ok.

If you added the F drive as a separate group using step 2 or 3, it would also include browse windows.

The remove REG file is only to undo (remove) if added using step 2 or 3. It will not affect the drive if it was added by any other method.

I see...

Well that's a bummer! I have no idea what I would have done to put it there in the first place. Do you know any other reason why this particular listing may be being stubborn (and what I may do to be able to get rid of it? not the end of the world I guess, but it bothers me that it's not doing what it should, lol!)

Thanks again for your help.

Usually, it would only be listed like that if it's a removable drive.

If this is the case, then you could use this below to remove it.

Thanks for this note. I was wondering why the SD card was showing up twice in Explorer! I'll remove the duplicate on my wife's machine (as well as mine) as having duplicate entities is confusing.

Thanks for this but what if the drive I have isn't F drive, do i just open the downloaded reg file in notepad and change the drive letter to the one I have? The drive I want to do this to is labeled in This PC as T-Force Vulcan SSD (P:) so would I just change the drive letter in the reg file from F: to P:? Or would I also include the volume label T-Force Vulcan SSD so like this:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{1979a718-e483-4d99-bd12-78e74c13b73f}]
@="P: T-Force Vulcan SSD" and then also change the reg file name along with any reference to the drive in the reg file?

@="P: T-Force Vulcan SSD" and then also change the reg file name along with any reference to the drive in the reg file?
Hello, and welcome. :alien:

Correct. You can just edit the REG file for the drive letter you want instead.

Be sure to also change the TargetFolderPath value for the correct drive letter.

that worked!!! Thank you. One small gripe though, lol, in the Navigation pane it's just labeled as P: Drive. Can I right click that and rename it to P: T-Force Vulcan SSD? Just wondering because i have all of my drives labeled with the actual manufacturer of the drive, it makes it easier to tell them apart.

Correct. You can just rename the two values in bold below for that.
