Personalization Add or Remove Folders in File Explorer Navigation Pane in Windows 11

Navigation_pane_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Libraries, Music, Pictures, and/or Videos folder(s) in the File Explorer navigation pane when using "Show all folders" for all users in Windows 11.

The navigation pane is the far left pane in File Explorer used to find files, folders, and drives on your PC or network.

When you turn on Show all folders in the navigation pane, the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Libraries, Music, Pictures, and Videos folders will always show in the navigation pane by default.

If you like, you can add and remove the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Libraries, Music, Pictures, and/or Videos folder(s) in the File Explorer navigation pane with "Show all folders" turned on.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove folders in the File Explorer navigation pane with "Show all folders" turned on.

Thank you to JeepWillys58 and GermanKiwi for providing the registry locations used for this tutorial.

Nope. Quick Access items are not hierarchical folder trees, they're just single links.

Exactly, and when I click this link I would expect the side pane to expand (preferably my C: drive) and jump to the respective linked folder. But this is not what happens when the Quick Access link is e.g. the "Downloads" folder. (See my gif above)

@Ghot Thanks, but I think there is a misunderstanding.

My goal would be:
- See "Quick access" links in navigation pane.
- Clicking a "Quick access" link expands the navigation pane to the respective folder (in its actual parent folder!) even when it is, say, the Downloads folder in my user profile folder.

Sounds easy but apparently not possible. 😢
I'm afraid "Pin to Quick Access" folders do not expand in the navigation pane. They basically act like shortcuts instead. :(

I do not want the "Quick Access" links to expand in place. I want that when I click them I jump to the expanded folder they are linking to. :-)

It does this for almost all kinds of folders but not for e.g. the Downloads folder as can be seen here:

It goes to the formerly hidden "Downloads" folder, but I would have wanted it to expand and go to L\Downloads or even better C:\Users\L\Downloads.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Another "Quick Access" folder link would jump to the folder's location on the hard drive, which I would like to be the case for *all* folders. But sub-folders of the user account folder and specifically the ones which normaly have their own entries (we were removing here) in the Navigation Pane, do not link to their hard drive location.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove folders in the File Explorer navigation pane with "Show all folders" turned on.
There are various ways by which folders can be removed even if "Show all folders" is turned on. It's possible to do this per-user, and without admin rights.

these are the 4 methods I'm aware of. It should only be necessary to do one of them. Although some people have raised edge cases where method 2 doesn't work, and suggested that method 3 should be added. In that case there's no need to use method 2 as well.

1. delete the CLSID key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace (32 & 64 bit registry)
this was popular in Windows 10 for removing folders from "This PC" in Windows 10. Tutorials on this site seem to use this for the 32 bit view.
2. Add "HiddenByDefault"=dword:00000001 to the CLSID key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace (32 & 64 bit registry)
this seems to be copied from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace CLSID keys. ( I think that this was part of the process of moving those folders to Desktop.
It is attractive in that it works instantly - if you have explorer open you don't even need to refresh to see the change.
3. Add the CLSID as a DWORD value to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum with the data set to 1.
This seems to be an extrapolation from the User policies found in GPEdit under 'User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Desktop\'

Remove Computer icon on the desktop - Group Policy Search
- If you disable this setting, Computer is displayed as usual, appearing as normal on the desktop, Start menu, folder tree pane, and Web views, unless restricted by another setting
Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop - Group Policy Search
- Note: To make changes to this setting effective, you must log off and then log back on.
Although the policies appear to be about desktop icons, the caveat 'unless restricted by another setting' is normally applied. Desktop icons can be hidden by inclusion in SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel in either HKLM or HKCU, by setting a DWORD CLSID value to 1. They are all set to 1 in the HKLM view, but can be overridden by setting to 0 in HKCU. Which is how 'Desktop Icon Settings' works.
As a policy setting is always shared between the 32 and 64 bit registry it only has to be done once in either view. It also works for the current user if set in HKCU. (Although you'd still need admin rights to set it.)
4. Set the SFGAO_NONENUMERATED (0x00100000) bit in the Attributes DWORD value in HKCR\CLSID\{insert actual CLSID here}\ShellFolder (32 & 64 bit registry)
There are examples of doing this in Windows 7 tutorials, although they only suggest direct editing of HKCR - i.e. HKLM\Software\Classes
(see: SFGAO (Shobjidl.h) - Win32 apps) e.g. in HKCR\CLSID\{1CF1260C-4DD0-4ebb-811F-33C572699FDE}\ShellFolder (Music) it would need to be set to 0xf090004d (which is the result of 0xf080004d OR 0x00100000)
This appears to do exactly the same thing as the policy in 3
This can be set by writing to HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{1CF1260C-4DD0-4ebb-811F-33C572699FDE}\ShellFolder - which doesn't require Admin rights.
Obviously this information applies to other items in the navigation pane.
