System Add or Remove "Processor performance boost mode" in Power Options on Windows 11

CPU_banner.webp

This tutorial will show you how to add (show) or remove (hide) the "Processor performance boost mode" power plan setting under "Processor power management" in Power Options for all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Processor performance boost mode allows you to specify how processors select a target frequency when allowed to select above maximum frequency by current operating conditions.

Intel Turbo Boost and AMD Turbo CORE technologies are features that allow processors to achieve additional performance when it is most useful (that is, at high system loads).

You can select to use an available "Processor performance boost mode" setting below for when "On battery" and "Plugged in":
  • Disabled = Don't select target frequencies above maximum frequency. In this mode, processor boosting is effectively turned off. The CPU will avoid entering turbo or boost frequencies and instead operate closer to its base frequency ceiling. This can significantly reduce power consumption and heat output, but at the cost of reduced burst performance and responsiveness in short workloads.
  • Enabled = Select target frequencies above maximum frequency. This is the standard behavior where boost functionality is allowed under normal conditions. The processor can opportunistically increase frequency when workload demands it, balancing performance gains with power and thermal constraints as managed by the system.
  • Aggressive (Default) = Always select the highest possible target frequency above nominal frequency. Aggressive mode favors performance more heavily, allowing the CPU to enter higher boost states more readily and sustain them longer. This should in theory improve responsiveness under bursty or heavy workloads but increases power draw and thermal output compared to the default enabled behavior.
  • Efficient Enabled = Select target frequencies above maximum frequency if hardware supports doing so efficiently. This mode still allows boosting, but with a stronger bias toward energy efficiency. The system attempts to use boost more selectively, avoiding unnecessary frequency spikes when the performance gain is marginal.
  • Efficient Aggressive = Always select the highest possible target frequency above nominal frequency if hardware supports doing so efficiently. This is a hybrid approach where boost is still performance-responsive, but the system continuously weighs efficiency more heavily than in Aggressive mode. It aims to deliver noticeable performance improvements while reducing wasted power in less demanding scenarios.
  • Aggressive At Guaranteed = Always select the highest possible target frequency above guaranteed frequency.
  • Efficient Aggressive AT Guaranteed = Always select the highest possible target frequency above guaranteed frequency if hardware supports doing so efficiently.

Option One

Add "Processor performance boost mode" to Power Options

1 Open Windows Terminal (Admin), and select Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste either command below into Terminal (Admin), and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR PERFBOOSTMODE -ATTRIB_HIDE

OR

Option Two

Remove "Processor performance boost mode" from Power Options

This is the default setting.

1 Open Windows Terminal (Admin), and select Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste either command below into Terminal (Admin), and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

powercfg -attributes SUB_PROCESSOR PERFBOOSTMODE +ATTRIB_HIDE

Thank you all for your information. I've learned a lot in this forum. Please take care of yourselves. We become old so quickly. I'm 67. I like Windows 7 the best. Brink is definitely well qualified to be the admin. He's provided me with a treasure trove of great advice. I don't like Windows 11 and AI. AI errors a lot. There is no human intelligence, only algorithms. Garbage input equals garbage output. Everyone knows that. It used to be humans who caused the errors. Computers never make errors if the data is correct. Sadly, much of the information on the internet is incorrect. Two people will make opposite statements about something that only has one correct answer. How can AI know which is correct? It can't. It has no real intelligence. Most AI algorithms choose the most popular answer if there is more than one. Almost all of them are proprietary. That's another reason I'm fortunate to be part of this forum with so many intelligent, well-educated members. I'm not supposed to make political comments, which I didn't know until I did. So I won't. One of the world's wealthiest men, who owns a large AI company, said AI will replace human labor. People will work for hobbies. I don't know if this is true. The future will tell us.
Elon Musk owns X and SpaceX. Mark Zuckerberg with Meta is worth well over 240 Billion Dollars—both love AI. The CEO of Microsoft loves AI. The directors of Amazon and Google love AI. I'm old, not very intellectual, and definitely not financially wealthy. But I am very well loved by my family. That's worth more than all the money in the world to me. I know God is real, and that Heaven and Hell last forever. There is too much evidence that Jesus Christ walked the earth. Most historians think he was only a man. Please consider the possibility that God is real. I love everyone because God loves us all. Jesus voluntarily gave his life for everyone. Thank you so very much for giving so much invaluable information for everyone to benefit from. Please love everyone. Thank you very much, once again.

I'm interested in settings to make the CPU keep the highest possible frequencies in higher usages (more than 50%)... I have an old Acer laptop that could benefit if the speed didn't go to base clock just by using Clip Studio lol

Powershell to set min and max freq. replace 15 and 75 to your desired values

Code:
powercfg -setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_PROCESSOR PROCTHROTTLEMIN 15

Code:
powercfg -setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_PROCESSOR PROCTHROTTLEMIN 75

apply changes after those commands:
Code:
powercfg.exe -setactive SCHEME_CURRENT

I know very little about the subject. Please see what Brink and others say. It should definitely pertain to you if you have what they said. If you choose the best performance option, it will definitely generate more heat. It will reduce the battery life before needing to be charged, in the power mode in settings when not plugged in, and on battery. I have Windows 11, version 25H2. There are 2 options under the Power Mode setting. Plugged in, and On battery. I'm not going to try the Powerscript.
Mine has an 11th-generation processor. 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1185G7 @ 3.00GHz (3.00 GHz). I recently purchased a 2024 Lenovo. I'm not going to try to boost the speed. I have it sitting on top of a Kooltek cooler and hooked up to a monitor, and I use a mouse and keyboard. They do explain how to do it, though. They say the 12th generation forward is mainly controlled by the processor, to my understanding. Please read the post from the beginning on the previous page. Wow, dracone published your answer. Thank you.

You get what you pay for. Except for the keyboard and mouse, my equipment is all old, but all of it still works great. I've had my computers and TVs on 24 hours a day, except for power outages and for cleaning. They still work great.

yep, as far as i know it works on 10, 11 and server
Thanks! Does it have a descriptive name? I use an utility with GUI that exposes hidden power settings, I might be able to look for it. (The name is Power Settings Explorer in case it matter.)

1) i added to my post above. forgot that you might have to call to activate the changes via powershell

2) under advanced power options it shows as "Minimum processor state" and "Maximum processor state", so maybe the same?

the reg locations should be:

min:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\893dee8e-2bef-41e0-89c6-b55d0929964c

max:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\bc5038f7-23e0-4960-96da-33abaf5935ec
