This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the WMIC command as an optional feature for all users in Windows 11.

The WMI command-line (WMIC) utility provides a command-line interface for Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMIC is compatible with existing shells and utility commands.

The WMIC tool is deprecated in Windows 10, version 21H1, and the 21H1 General Availability Channel release of Windows Server. This tool is superseded by Windows PowerShell for WMI. Note: This deprecation only applies to the command-line management tool. WMI itself isn't affected.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22572, WMIC is now available as an optional feature that can be uninstalled or reinstalled via Settings > Apps > Optional Features.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26100.9278 (24H2) and build 26200.9278 (25H2), starting in August 2026, Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2 no longer include the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) utility. WMIC is already removed by default in new installations of Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2, and is no longer available as a Feature on Demand (FoD). This change affects only the WMIC utility. Option One

Add or Remove WMIC command Feature in Settings


This option is no longer available, but you can still use Option Two.


1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on System on the left side, and click/tap on Optional features on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Do step 4 (add) or step 5 (remove) below for what you want.

4 Add WMIC command Feature

This is the default setting.


A) Click/tap on the View features button. (see screenshot below)​

B) Check WMIC, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)​

C) Click/tap on Install to confirm. (see screenshot below)​

D) You can now close Settings if you like.​

5 Remove WMIC command Feature

A) Under Installed features, click/tap on WMIC to expand it open, and click/tap on the Uninstall button. (see screenshot below)​

B) You can now close Settings if you like.​




Option Two

Add or Remove WMIC command Feature using Command


1 Open Windows Terminal (Admin), and select Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste the command below you want to use into Windows Terminal (Admin), and press Enter. (see screenshots below)

(Add WMIC)​
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:WMIC~~~~​

OR​

(Remove WMIC)​
DISM /Online /Remove-Capability /CapabilityName:WMIC~~~~​

3 You can now close Windows Terminal (Admin) if you like.

In case anyone was asking, for the current 24H2 builds the WMIC status is:
- When you perform an in-place upgrade, WMIC is enabled by default (no changes to Windows).
- When you perform a clean install, WMIC is disabled right after installation. Because MS hates you. This might change (?), since they're still rolling out updates before the official RTM.

Just had the first thread in which the WMIC script commands (in Tuneup plus) reported:

'wmic' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Option #2 step#2 was successful.

If you're customizing a 24H2 ISO, removing the OOBEFodSetup scheduled task will prevent OOBE from disabling WMIC (otherwise it's already enabled in the offline image).
I imagine this allows existing legacy scripts to finish their work, while discouraging WMIC's active use after you're signed on.

I tried both options. Option 1 was a bust, there is no Optional Features in my panel, Windows 11 Pro.

Option 2 just hangs after the Image Version, I never get the progress bar or the completion message.

OK, I see that I confused the two pictures. However, that didn't work anyway. When I enter WMIC in the search box, it never allows me to move on, I'm stuck there.

I think I don't need it back bad enough to keep screwing around with this. :D

I entered the text into Terminal. It didn't find it, but when I removed the space at the end, it did. Then it hung at 37.8 until I gave up.

About RAID: I just ran Speccy and copied the summary. That's what it found.

Well I'll be darned. I rebooted and ran the WMIC line again, and it immediately said 100%, completed successfully. Weird.
