Hi,

Please excuse me if this has be answered before? I did a very quick look and couldn't find anything?

What I would like to know is when you click on a nfo file extension in windows notepad it doesn't give you the option of selecting Notepad? even though in previous versions of windows it was possible, you can of course rename the file to txt extension and it will view it but that is not what I want to do each time. is there a registry fix or some simple way of changing apart from the only option of Microsoft store?

Thanks for any help.

You can use the attached batch script to Add Open with Notepad to the Windows Context Menu for All Files.

Execute the batch script and type Y and press enter key to Add Open with Notepad to the Windows Context Menu for All Files.

To remove it from context menu, type N and press Enter key.

It is possible to open any file type in Notepad, even if Notepad is not (yet) in the list when you right-click on the file. Select Open with > Choose another app. Then click 'show more apps'. Find Notepad in this list, select it, then click OK. From now on Notepad will be included in the list of possible apps to open this file type.

The Context Menu is when you right-click on the file, that menu that comes up.

Open Settings (Win+I), go to Apps -> Default Apps, scroll all the way down and click "Choose defaults by file type"... In the box at the top, you should be able to type 'nfo' and see "System Information", click that, and hopefully the "More Apps" will be there, at which point, you click it, and select Notepad, if it's not in the list, scroll all the way to the bottom and click the link to search for an app and find Notepad to put in there.

Thanks for all the help unfortunately I only have 2 options Microsoft store, system information. No other choice available to me which is really annoying given that Notepad is installed and it does not recognise it as an option. So not sure what else can be done certainly a let down from windows 10 that's for sure.

This may sound odd, but try temporarily changing your theme to a high contrast one. I've seen cases before in Win10 where the text for the 'More apps' and 'Look for another app...' links has been the same colour as the background, rendering it invisible...

Damn, you are right, the links are there but they are painted white, so they are invisible. What the....
Using a dark theme did not help, using a high contrast theme did
More importantly, the color of that link seems to be set by Settings->Personalization->Colors->Choose your color....

Anyway..., you gotta have the Store Notepad version.
While the classic Notepad is still present in the system, it won't handle the protocol.
Either that, or grab a reputable 3rd party app or stand alone program.

I didn't use a store version of Notepad, just whatever came with Windows and it works fine, the NFOs (most) are only XML files anyway and the ASCII based ones just look weird anyway, but work.
