Hello all,

After the monthly updates last night my remote computer rebooted, and I can no longer login with the same credentials that I have been using. I can go to the remote computer and log in physically with the credentials, so this is not the issue.

The error on the client is "The logon attempt failed".

On the target server, I see the following in the Security event log:

```
An account failed to log on.
Subject:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account Name: -
Account Domain: -
Logon ID: 0x0
Logon Type: 3
Account For Which Logon Failed:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account Name: <USER>
Account Domain: -
Failure Information:
Failure Reason: An Error occured during Logon.
Status: 0xC000006D
Sub Status: 0x0
Process Information:
Caller Process ID: 0x0
Caller Process Name: -
Network Information:
Workstation Name: <NAME>
Source Network Address: <IP>
Source Port: 0
Detailed Authentication Information:
Logon Process: NtLmSsp
Authentication Package: NTLM
Transited Services: -
Package Name (NTLM only): -
Key Length: 0
This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.
The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.
The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).
The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.
The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.
The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.
```

I have spent the morning with Grok and here are a few of the remedies I have tried, none of which worked:

```
  • Action:
    1. Open Local Security Policy (run secpol.msc).
    2. Navigate to Local Policies > Security Options:
      • Set Network security: LAN Manager authentication level to Send NTLMv2 response only. Refuse LM & NTLM.
      • Ensure Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only is disabled if applicable (though not relevant since credentials are valid).
    3. Check Group Policy:
      • Open Group Policy Editor (run gpedit.msc).
      • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Security.
      • Set Require secure RPC communication to Disabled.
      • Set Require user authentication for remote connections by using Network Level Authentication to Disabled (to match Step 2).
    4. If the machine is on a domain, check with the domain administrator if recent Group Policy updates are affecting RDP.
  • Test: Apply changes, run gpupdate /force in Command Prompt, and try RDC.
```

```
6. Client-Side Checks
  • Why: The client machine’s configuration or cached credentials could contribute to the issue.
  • Action:
    1. Clear cached credentials on the client:
      • On the client machine, go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager.
      • Under Windows Credentials, remove any entries for the target machine’s IP or hostname.
    2. Update the RDP client:
      • Ensure the client machine is fully updated (check Windows Update).
      • Alternatively, download the latest Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store.
    3. Test RDC from a different client machine to rule out client-specific issues.
  • Test: Try RDC after clearing credentials and updating the client.
```

```
    1. Run System File Checker to repair corrupted system files:
      • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run sfc /scannow.
      • If errors are found, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair the system image, then rerun sfc /scannow.
    2. Check registry for RDP settings:
      • Open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server.
      • Ensure fDenyTSConnections is set to 0 (enables RDP).
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp.
      • Ensure SecurityLayer is set to 2 (or try 1 for RDP Security Layer instead of TLS).
  • Test: After rolling back updates or repairing files, attempt RDC.
```

- nothing in Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager and TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager

- I have also created a new account/profile altogether, but I still run into the same issue.

At a loss now, and I have exhausted all obvious options to me, opening a ticket here to help further diagnose.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Another tidbit I just thought of, is that (ironically) this machine is a Hyper-V machine and I can RDP to the VMs hosted on it, but I am not able to RDP into the server (host) itself.

Looks like this is related to a Windows update. I restored the target server to a backup 4 days ago, and it works as expected.

What about accessing shares using standard networking, not RDP?

I ran into the same problem as you WRT RDP this morning between two of my machines, and networking also doesn't work. The PCs show up in File Explorer, and I can ping them, but I can't logon from either to the other. I have a couple of other machines that continue to be accessible from both these PCs, and all were updated Tuesday.

Ah, sorry @barreleye, I have reverted to a previous backup and have suspended updates for 5 weeks on my machine. There wasn't a way to revert the update that I could see. 😤 Otherwise, I would test that for you.

Additionally, this thread was somehow marked as solved, which is not the case. I have correctly marked it as Unsolved.

Do you have Event ID 6167 from "LSA (LsaSrv)" in your System Log?

"There is a partial mismatch in the machine ID. This indicates that the ticket has either been manipulated or it belongs to a different boot session. Failing authentication."

I do, and I found a couple of recent messages on Reddit reporting the same thing (I'm on Windows 11 Pro; one of the posters is using Home):

Code:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/1mq6p4n/releasing_windows_11_build_261005061_to_the/?q=partial&type=comments&cId=4d27ea06-149d-4c13-8dff-d093afcf1535&iId=01c18e08-6c31-496a-8650-236f421fad44

In my case, this is a copy of my main machine, that I renamed, and I intended to keep it as a spare. Both are still activated. I wonder if that could be the problem.

P.S. Pardon the URL in the "code" section. I can't figure out how to stop the forum software from encoding it as "MEDIA=reddit" and losing the search embedded in the URL. Usually, I just have to turn off the very unhelpful and unwanted "unfurl" attribute, but this one is even more hostile.

Heck with it, I'm copying the messages below:

(19 hours ago) Heads-up for anyone running Windows 11 Home in a peer-to-peer setup receiving Error 6167 “partial mismatch in the machine ID” in the SYSTEM event log.

Just ran into a frustrating issue with a client: Two Windows 11 Home PCs, one acting as a server in a peer-to-peer environment. Neither machine was cloned, so the usual SID conflict from cloning doesn't apply here. After spending the afternoon troubleshooting, I traced the problem to KB5065426—a recent mainstream channel update. The issue only occurs when both PCs have this update installed.

I rolled back KB5065426 on the server PC and paused updates for 35 days. The client PC can now connect without issue.

This seems to be a legit bug introduced by KB5065426. Hoping Microsoft or someone in the community finds a fix that doesn’t involve a full reformat. If you’re seeing similar behavior, try rolling back the update on the server side first

(27 days ago) The update itself installed fine on two of my test machines, but immediately after both lost the ability to do authentication with each in both directions. All attempts to use RDP or file shares result in Login Failed/Your credentials did not work.

The target system immediately shows LSA(LsaSrv) Event ID 6167 "There is a partial mismatch in the machine ID. This indicates that the ticket has either been manipulated or it belongs to a different boot session. Failing authentication."

I have never seen this Lsa error before so thinking it's something that's new with this build.

I have tried creating new local accounts as well (thinking it was a Microsoft account issues), but the auth problem persists.

Authentication works as expected between patched and my other unpatched systems, the problem is only between 26100.5061 builds, and none of the systems are domain joined.

Subsequent messages go on to talk about using psgetsid to determine if the two machines are using the same SID, and if so, using the program sidchg to fix it:

Amazing! Nice find there @barreleye! I can confirm that I did clone my drive as the basis for the machine I use to connect to it, also renamed to a new machine name. 😅 So the server was the original, and I cloned it for the client that is now connecting to it. I am pretty sure that is it. 👍 THANK YOU!

Awesome... thank you for that @barreleye. I took a look at both machines and I do not see 6176 in either of them, but it may be that I need to have the KB installed on both to get that to surface.

As for the SID... are you familiar with how to simply view the SID of a machine? Searching is turning up empty.

Nevermind x2 ... None of those worked. 🤣 I had to make Grok Think Harder and it recommened PsGetSid from SysInternals. Turns out I have that already locally and I tried it on both machines... they are the same! So this looks very much related and I will see if I can change one of them with SIDCHG.

Looks like this is related to a Windows update. I restored the target server to a backup 4 days ago, and it works as expected.
I get updates all the time, including the latest one - RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) still works here.

That said, sometimes, usually a major update may reset to defaults, so my suggestion is to double check the machine in question is still configured as before the update - File Printer sharing enabled. Also under Systems Properties, the Remote tab, make sure the "Allow remote connections to this computer" check box is checked.

Good luck.

Hmm... sorry for resurrecting this issue, but I am finally attending to this as the five weeks I suspended updates are already up. 🤯 It was a good if but sudden reminder to continue this.

I am attempting to download sidchg here:

But it's giving me a pretty aggressive warning on the browser download that this file is not known/downloaded often. I wanted to throw this out there to verify I am in the right place before I pull the trigger. Thank you for any confirmation. 👍

The proper way to clone a system is to use sysprep.exe. It will clear the SID and prepare the system to create a new SID upon startup. Maybe you can use that.

Thank you, @MysticTaz, I took the dive and went with Sidchg. It took about 10 minutes, but it worked like a champ and rebooted into a new SID. Don't be like me and buy a license. There is a trial license that works just fine here:

I didn't see this until after I made the purchase. 🤦‍♂️ What can I say, I like punching myself in the face these days. Oh well, at least I supported an independent software vendor. Hopefully, some good karma out there for others who need it. 👍
