Personalization Always or Never Combine Taskbar buttons and Hide Labels in Windows 11

  • Staff
Taskbar_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to always, when the taskbar is full, or never combine taskbar buttons and hide labels for your account, specific users, or all users in Windows 11.

The taskbar in Windows 11 shows the Start menu, Search, Task View, Widgets, Chat, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Store buttons (icons) aligned to the center by default.

If you have more than one display connected to your PC, then you can show the taskbar on all displays instead of just on the main display.

The main taskbar is the taskbar with the clock and system tray icons on it, and is on your main display. Taskbars that show on other displays not set as your main display do have the clock (if turned on), but does not show the system tray icons on them.

Starting with Windows 11 build 23466 (Dev), build 25915 (Canary), and build 22631.2199 (Beta), Microsoft brings you an early version of one of the most requested features for Windows 11, never combined mode. In never combined mode, you’ll be able to see each window of your applications on the taskbar individually, as well as their corresponding labels. And Microsoft provides a separate setting for turning this on for other taskbars (multiple monitor scenarios for example).

The Combine Taskbar buttons and hide labels and Combine Taskbar buttons and hide labels on other taskbars settings only applies to the taskbar buttons of currently open windows.

If you turn on Show labels on Taskbar pins, it will override the Combine Taskbar buttons and hide labels and Combine Taskbar buttons and hide labels on other taskbars settings to hide labels.

Now available to everyone starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361.

I updated mine, and still the option is not there. Do you have build 22621.2361?

Ok I just updated today and now have the option in taskbar settings, but it does nothing... build 22621.2283. I've rebooted several times and tried several different configurations but nothing has changed...

Please let me know if you figure this out, because I'm having the same problem.
Windows specifications:

OS build 22621.2361

I've tried:
  • Using ViveTool/ViveTool GUI
  • From this page:
    • Enabling via .reg file
    • Enabling via .bat file
    • Enabling via Group Policy Editor
Nothing has worked.

I have recently installed 2023-09 Cumulative Update for Windows Version 22H2 for x64-based System (KB5030219). And now I'm able to show labels on taskbar. ;-)

However, in compare with Windows 10, the feature seems to be buggy. As you can see attached screenshot:
1. If application has a long title, the overlapped part will not be truncated with "...".
2. The tabs on taskbar are not equally wide. If the title length changes dynamically, the tabs will move position dynamically.

I have reported via Feedback Hub. Hope these can be addressed soon in next release.

Hi, I have 23H2 22631.2715, I can see the taskbar config options to combine/uncombine icons, but they don't change anything for me. Any idea what's causing that? Also enabling/disabling badges doesn't do anything.

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

This will only affect icons on the taskbar that have an open window.

Pinned icons without an open window will still only show as an icon until opened.

Thanks, I have plenty of pinned and un-pinned apps running. Sadly they all behave the same. There must be some other setting preventing me from customizing this :(

Have you already tried using the policy setting for this in option 5 or 6 to see if that may force it to work for you?

Have you already tried using the policy setting for this in option 5 or 6 to see if that may force it to work for you?
I didn't. I have all the apps un-combined now, which would be fine if the badges were not displayed.
The policy editor has all the variables undefined currently and I don't see any benefit of setting the "Prevent grouping of taskbar items" to No, as I don't have them currently grouped.

Just to confirm, did you turn off Show badges on taskbar apps below?

Oh yeah, I did that and also verified via regedit, the values were changing as they should. But visually, nothing changed in the taskbar. Same goes for the combine/uncombine setting.

Which apps still show badges on their taskbar icon? Could be a setting in the app's settings overriding.

All of them: Firefox, Edge, cmd.exe, Slack, Outlook, ... Literally, all of the apps. The setting changes nothing for me.
Possibly a bug, but I haven't heard any reports of taskbar badging cannot be turned off other than for you so far.

I am having the same issue after installing the Copilot update. I had it set to When taskbar is full, but now when I change it to Always combine, it doesn't take effect even after restarting the computer or using the options here.

Is there any way to ungroup the buttons but hide the labels? I don't understand why Microsoft does this kind of thing. First, they remove something important, then they add only half an option.

Here we are in March 2024 and some of my Win 11 PCs still do not have the option "Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels." They have the same Windows version as other PCs that have the option. Has anyone found out why some PCs don't have this option?
