I have an X570 Gigabyte Xtreme and 5900X CPU. At the start of last year I was planning to get a new X670 build but held off as there were some early problems around BIOS, DDR5 etc.

Now things have matured I'm looking into a full build will all-new kit.
The X870 boards are launching this week, I've been with AMD for a few years now. I'd want a 9000X3D chip as I've read that the new 9000 series aren't that brilliant compared to the 7000 series.
I'm also looking at the new Intel Z890 boards and CPUs which launch next month.

I've got no brand loyalty, I just need to make a decision next month on what to get. I'm leaning more towards Intel this time - been with AMD since their TR 1900X CPU launched

I'm not interested in water cooling so whatever CPU I get must work well with a decent air cooler such as my Noctua D15S.

I've used Gigabyte for man years but I do like the look of the MSI boards.

Lots to think about!

I'm waiting also except I have been with Intel for a while now and I will switch to AMD

IM I'm very interested in this Board Gigabyte B650 AERO G ? And I'm going with the Ryzen 9 7900x3d

So I will just wait and see what other's say

Intel CPUs has lately been consuming a bit more power when boosting compared to AMD, this affects cooling also. With these new upcoming chips, there is not much to say until extensive benchmarking and testing has been done. Whichever route you choose, I think you will be happy, given you have adequate cooling.

Yes the Noctua cooler is a beast! Like you I'm waiting on reviews and tests before committing, it's got to last a few years. Hopefully the problems with the Intel 13/14 gen are solved now...

I plan to get a newer chassis as well, so may be able to get a second Noctua fan for my cooler - my current Corsair case isn't wide enough

For gaming it seems the 7800X3D is better. You could always upgrade to a 9800X3D when they launch.

That's one of the options I'm considering.

If you use Adobe Premiere a lot, then consider Intel as the QuickSync feature boosts Video encoding speeds quite a lot. For most other tasks, there is not much difference I'd say.

I'm more a gamer than a content producer so it will all come down to whichever looks best when they launch

The X870 boards get a full launch tomorrow, Intel boards launch on Oct 17th with the CPUs a week later so by the end of October I should have a decision made. This PC has done me well for over 4 years but it's time to get up-to-date.
I'll keep my existing storage and GPU for now, these can be upgraded later on. A new PSU with high-power support for GPUs is a must though.

I'll likely sell off some of the parts. I'm running a 64GB Corsair DDR4 RAM kit that would be worth a few quid on eBay

For gaming it seems the 7800X3D is better. You could always upgrade to a 9800X3D when they launch.

That's one of the options I'm considering.
They are both the same price

AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D 12-Core, 24-Thread Desktop Processor, up to 5.6GHz Amazon.de

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Processor with 3D V-Cache Technology, 8 Cores/16 Distorted Threads, Zen 4 Architecture 104M Cache, 120W TDP, Up to 5.0GHz Boost Frequency, AMD 5, DDR5 & PCIe 5.0 Amazon.de

Due to the design the 7800X3D is likely better for gaming, as it only uses one CCD with all 8 cores on - the 7900 has two CCDs with 6 cores on each and only the first CCD has the 3D cache. There will be some extra latency when gaming

There's some "Moving" in the markets concerning both INTEL and AMD mainly concerning NVIDIA. The "Money men and Canadian Hedge funds" (How is it these Canadian Funds seem to have more money than the combined might of Saudi-Arabia, Qatar and the UAE together !!!) might be interested in acquiring one or other of these companies - which could alter the whole equation here. If Nvidia get involved emphasis will probably be shifted towards the Snapdragon chip especially as Google wants to distance itself from SAMSUNG with its own phones and will try and replace Android with something else so it might well be worth looking at some type of ARM processors.

I know this is a technical Forum but it's still worth being aware of Financial markets especially when largge tech companies are involved - so if you CAN hold off for a while - this is IMO a case of "Wait a bit and see".

Cheers

@BrianInEngland

I'd still hang on a bit since if INTEL remain independent and they do very good graphics you might be better off with INTEL as NVIDIA / AMD will concentrate more on the mobile market rather than the computer end.

    2 X Intel i7
@BrianInEngland

I'd still hang on a bit since if INTEL remain independent and they do very good graphics you might be better off with INTEL as NVIDIA / AMD will concentrate more on the mobile market rather than the computer end.

Cheers

I highly doubt the impact will be significant. Sure there's been mobile and ARM interest for a very long time, but x68_64 won't be gone in a very long time, if ever, in the desktop side of things.

Software needs to catch up significantly before we're anywhere close to a total x86_64 wipeout.

Intel does HORRIBLE graphics. As of now, Intel ARK is a total failure. A lot of games don't even run using these GPUs and some produce a lot of graphical glitches, which neither nVidia nor Radeon cards produce. ARK is also significantly slower compared to the competition.

Intel has a long walk to do before one can even claim there's any sort of competition.

Nobody is suggesting INTEL for ARM graphics or ARM architecture at all -- actually the latest INTEL Graphics @ 4K UHD and 8K video often built in to the Mobos aren't at all bad if you aren't an inveterate gamer and I've got no problems at all with the latest crop of MiniPC's with 2X and 3X 4K UHD HDMI graphics -- It depends of course on what the user wants to do.

Absolutely, for big desktop builds it's nvidia GPU with AMD or Intel CPU for me.

I've never fancied using an AMD graphics card

It's horrible if you game or wanna do compute. For the rest it is very good.

Honestly with the new releases just ahead for Intel and the possible early release of the Ryzen 9800X3D it might be wise to wait a little longer. I'm still sitting on an X570/5900X currently and waiting to upgrade. I skipped the Zen4 CPUs expecting/hoping for better Zen5 ones. I'm not a gamer so I really have no need for the X3D CPUs. Now I'm kinda waiting for the X870 motherboards to get released. Considering upgrading to a new motherboard and possibly going with the 9900x. But I'm no hurry currently. Getting to pay my home off.
A few months back I had intended on building my son a new gaming pc but then Zen5 came out, was not as good as expected and now those 7800X3D CPUs have gone up more than $100.
I had intended on a Z790/14700k to replace my daily driver but held off. I just have it as a spare system now.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
