AMD Stutter Experienced with fTPM Enabled on Windows 10 and 11

  • Staff
Article Number: PA-410
This documentation provides information on improving intermittent performance stutter(s) on select PCs running Windows® 10 and 11 with Firmware Trusted Platform Module (“fTPM”) enabled.

Issue Description
AMD has determined that select AMD Ryzen™ system configurations may intermittently perform extended fTPM-related memory transactions in SPI flash memory (“SPIROM”) located on the motherboard, which can lead to temporary pauses in system interactivity or responsiveness until the transaction is concluded.

Update and Workaround
  • Update: Affected PCs will require a motherboard system BIOS (sBIOS) update containing enhanced modules for fTPM interaction with SPIROM. AMD expects that flashable customer sBIOS files to be available starting in early May, 2022. Exact BIOS availability timing for a specific motherboard depends on the testing and integration schedule of your manufacturer. Flashable updates for motherboards will be based on AMD AGESA 1207 (or newer).
  • Workaround: As an immediate solution, affected customers dependent on fTPM functionality for Trusted Platform Module support may instead use a hardware TPM (“dTPM”) device for trusted computing. Platform dTPM modules utilize onboard non-volatile memory (NVRAM) that supersedes the TPM/SPIROM interaction described in this article.
    1. COMPATIBILITY: Please check with your system or motherboard manufacturer to ensure that your platform supports add-in dTPM modules before attempting or implementing this workaround.
    2. WARNING: If switching an active system from fTPM to dTPM, it is critical that you disable TPM-backed encryption systems (e.g. BitLocker Drive Encryption) and/or back up vital system data prior to switching TPM devices. You must have full administrative access to the system, or explicit support from your IT administrator if the system is managed. For more information on transferring ownership to a new TPM device, please visit this Microsoft webpage.

So I have got TPM module from China for $10, that should solve the never-ending problems with fTPM. The only downsize it that this Infineon TPM module is not actually secure, made in 2013, vulnerable to bug from 2017. No firmware available. Whatever, as long as Windows does not report it as a problem and it accepts it. :smirk:

I bought mine directly from MSI. Mine is running fw 5.63, which is dated 2016, but Windows Update hasn't thrown up any message regarding the need for it to be updated.

But, just for S&G I sent a message to MSI via the contact form linking to the Microsoft article and the Infineon web page where the firmware links are for the vendor specific items.

Who knows, maybe they respond?

I got one of the $7.75 TPM modules from China with the bad Infineon 5.0.1089.2 firmware. Gigabyte doesn't provide a firmware update method for the TPM chip so I poked around on the net and found what was needed to update this firmware by combining info from a couple places. A crude outline of what I did using PowerShell is attached -- some fiddling will be needed for the specific situation.

Can't say whether it will work for most of these chips but it's worth considering.

MSI has finally released the new BIOS, but a bit too late for me.

EDIT: Unfortunately, it causes BSOD upon every restart, I had to revert to the original BIOS. fTPM - never-ending story. :weary:

Have you updated chipset drivers too?
There are still only those from February, AMD has not caught up with it's own AGESA update.
Can't say whether it will work for most of these chips but it's worth considering.
Thanks, it indeed worked, I just postponed it, because it seems too overcomplicated, but in the end, it was not.

They sent me a reply to contact their US support hotline. I didn't bother at this point.

This looks enticing. I'm going to try it out since Tairiku had no issues.

MSI has finally released the new BIOS, but a bit too late for me.

EDIT: Unfortunately, it causes BSOD upon every restart, I had to revert to the original BIOS. fTPM - never-ending story. :weary:

Glad you mentioned this - 1H2 is now out for my mobo, officially on MSI download page, so I'm going to flash that now.

Have you updated chipset drivers too?

They are old. AMD drivers from March, already have them. There is a newer version of the StoreMI driver, from earlier this month, so grabbed that, but should not affect anything.

There are still only those from February, AMD has not caught up with it's own AGESA update.

Thanks, it indeed worked, I just postponed it, because it seems too overcomplicated, but in the end, it was not.

Glad to know. I'm going to take a stab at this myself.

I have an Asus ROG Strix X570 E-Gaming which has had the fTpm issues (audio stuttering intermittently). I've updated the mainboard with the latest bios 4403. So far so good but I need to use the PC for a few more days to confirm if the issue has been fixed.

Just to follow up since installing AGESA 1.2.0.7 bios F36e on my Gigabyte Aorus Master the stutter has not recurred, however, a windows update reenabled USB power management which did some crazy stuff until I caught it and turned it off.

Are you going to upgrade to 5000 series Ryzen ? I got about 20% boost from 3700x to 5800x.
The B350 won't take a Ryzen 7 5800X, my 3800X seems to be benchmarking way above what it should be and coupled with an RTX3070 Ti is working extremely well
Might look at a 5800X for the next system due for upgrade.
