UPDATED 10/20 10:45AM Redmond time with link to download and install from the Store!

Hello Windows Insiders,

Today we have announced that the first preview of Android™ apps on Windows 11 is now available for Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel in the U.S. If you haven’t already read this blog post from Giorgio Sardo, please do as it highlights the overall experience you can expect to have with Android apps on Windows 11.

Our focus right now is delivering this first preview on the now-released version of Windows 11 in the Beta Channel (Windows 11 Build 22000.xxx series builds) in the U.S. The Dev Channel is now on builds from a new development cycle that isn’t matched to what is released to the general public and will not get the preview of Android apps on Windows 11 today. We know Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel are excited to try out Android apps on Windows 11 out and we plan to bring the preview to them down the road. It’s now available for the Dev Channel! And Release Preview Channel too!

Getting started

To get started:
  1. Your PC needs to be on Windows 11 (Build 22000.xxx series builds) and meet these hardware requirements.
  2. You may need to enable virtualization for your PC’s BIOS/UEFI. Click here for a guide on how to enable this on your PC.
  3. Your PCs’ region must be set to the U.S.
  4. Your PC must be in the Beta Channel. If you are new to the Windows Insider Program, click here to get started with registration and joining your PC to the Beta Channel.
  5. You will also need to have a U.S.-based Amazon account to use the Amazon Appstore.

After that, just click here to go to the Microsoft Store which will guide you through the steps to verify if your device meets the minimum system requirements, setup your environment, and discover right away the new Android apps and games.

The new component that powers Android apps on Windows 11 through the Amazon Appstore is called the Windows Subsystem for Android™ and you will see a listing for it under your Start menu where you can adjust specific settings for the experience. The version of Windows Subsystem for Android™ being released today is version 1.7.32815.0. Updates for the Windows Subsystem for Android™ will automatically come through the Microsoft Store. If the PC requires a restart, the Amazon Appstore will automatically launch after restart, or you can launch it from the Start menu.

Click here for more general information on Windows Subsystem for Android. And for developer documentation, click here.

Giving feedback

As you use the preview of Android apps on Windows 11, there are a few ways to give feedback based on the issue you are experiencing:
  • If you are having issues with your Amazon account or purchases through the Amazon Appstore – please file feedback to Amazon here.
  • If you are having issues with specific apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore, please file feedback via Feedback Hub under Apps > [Name of app].
  • If you are having issues installing the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), the Amazon Appstore itself and apps from the Amazon Appstore – please file feedback via Feedback Hub under Apps > Windows Subsystem for Android™.

Known issues

[Microsoft Store]
  • The Microsoft Store does not display review ratings for Amazon Appstore apps.
[Amazon Appstore]
  • If you are experiencing Amazon App Store sign in problems turn your Ad Blocker off.
  • Accessibility options are not yet enabled when using the Amazon Appstore.
[Windows Subsystem for Android]
  • Network access issues on Cellular LTE on ARM64.
  • May see display visual artifacts on certain applications on ARM64.
  • Performance may vary when running multiple concurrent Apps.
  • There are known camera issues on certain apps.
  • Apps coming out of modern standby will encounter issues.
Thanks,
BLB

I've had no luck on sideloading, though games via the Amazon Appstore are working.

are you all who are sideloading just connecting via "adb" to the local IP (either "127.0.0.1:58526" or the one listed in the subsystem) and then using "adb install"? I'm getting back:

Performing Streamed Install
Success

when doing that but then nothing happens.
for me after sideload, the app icon appear on the start menu

What I want to know is how are people even sideloading, do they just put the apk on the desktop and then right click on it or do they copy it to a certain directory on the system?

basically you have to do the usual developer type install via adb.exe in just a couple steps, the instructions are here.

I had to install platform-tools to get adb:

Then I started Windows Subsystem For Android. Then in the platform-tools folder I extracted I ran adb connect 127.0.0.1:58526
Note you have to have debugging enabled in Windows Subsystem for Android. Once connected, for simplicity I put the APK file in the platform-tools folder. Then run adb install xyz.apk <- whatever apk file to install.

I always used the following for installing adb as it will always install the latest version and it takes 15 seconds to have adb working:

1634769945541.png

However, I seem to have two different issues:
PS C:\Users\vince\desktop> adb connect 127.0.0.1:58526
* daemon not running; starting now at tcp:5037
* daemon started successfully
cannot connect to 127.0.0.1:58526: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. (10061)

1634770068474.png

I can't get it to assign a IP address as it says Unavailable and I already tried refresh.

I looked at this as well:
Windows Subsystem for Android™️ and it appears that Amazon Appstore needs to be working.

Then, do any of you actually have Amazon Appstore in the Start Menu apps list or Settings-> Apps and Features?

just refresh until you get ip, after that use that ip to connect through adb
Refresh was not how I fixed it as that didn't do anything, neither did Reset to defaults. It was actually Turn off and then I clicked on Manage Developer Settings under Developer mode which opened up another box that starts up Windows Subsystem for Android which took awhile to get started and I closed the dialog window after that. Then all of a sudden, Amazon Appstore shows up in the recently installed apps and the adb connect works and I also installed the latest SoFi apk from apkmirror.com and ofcourse the Amazon Appstore also works as I signed in using my Amazon account. The IP also shows up as 172.31.6.44 in Windows Subsystem for Android:

C:\Users\vince\Desktop>adb disconnect
disconnected everything

C:\Users\vince\Desktop>adb devices
List of devices attached

It is not supposed to show any devices when disconnected

C:\Users\vince\Desktop>adb connect 127.0.0.1:58526
connected to 127.0.0.1:58526

C:\Users\vince\Desktop>adb devices
List of devices attached
127.0.0.1:58526 device

Just hope I don't have to go through all that after I reboot. Seems like Windows Subsystem for Android did not actually run after I start the computer.

US this and US that...I'm very disappointed.

Yet another "Cortana" beta release where it will take forever to be globally available. 😞
I've set my Beta VM to use and I'm getting it.

Until they (MS) get there act together I have had some success with LDPlayer emulator - This is aimed at a games player but works with your Google (android) account and with your Local Play store

I used it to monitor my security system which uses an android device for display of camera feeds, and setting the cameras and alarm options

It does need the virtualisation set on in the BIOS like the Microsoft one and also uses a fair bit of memory but no need to sideload and worked with everything I threw at it, I no longer use it as I have a 10.1" Android Tablet in a stand on my desk that takes up no screen space on my monitors

I'm gonna "Upgrade" my RP-ring PC to Beta and see if I get it to work there. On my laptop I'm on Dev build so have to wait for WSA to come there too. Might have to move around a few bits as I'm not certain which region it is on at the moment. I've used US and others in the past. Think this one is set to Finland.

FFS...Microsoft Store actually checks for CPU compatibility. I can't install this because my CPU is 1st Gen. Ryzen. 😞

I know for a fact that Android apps will fly on my Laptop. This is ridiculous.

If I could, I'd fly to Redmond and show them my middle finger. 🤬

I even tried to trick Windows into thinking I have a different CPU. Works well in Task Manager

Ok, I cheated...

Installed WSA on my laptop which does not have a compatible CPU and isn't even on Beta channel, but on Dev channel, sideloaded one app I use on my phone a lot and everything works exactly as expected.

Screw Amazon App Store and MS system requirements. 😂

Normally, it's in /Android/data but who knows how it's done here.

Update:
Install the Sweech file transfer app and then you can access the filesystem
