Another option instead of TeamViewer

Hi! I've been using TeamViewer to assist my relatives with setups and troubleshooting for a while. However, recently I've noticed some issues with the connection becoming intermittent and I suspect it might be on TeamViewer's side.
We're both using the Windows operating system.
Do you have any insight into whether AnyDesk is a reliable alternative?
I'd appreciate any recommendations you might have!

I've been paying for Anydesk for years and it works great. However, I do not know what it's limitations are if one doesn't have a subscription.

Looks like you've hit your usage limit. Teamviewer and Anydesk are solid, but their free versions come with restrictions. Give HelpWire: Free And Simple Remote Support a shot. I've been using it for a few months now and it gives you all the essential features plus it's free.

Doesn't "Desktop sharing" or "enable remote assistance" work.

I'm sure there are far more experienced windows people here on these boards who could help with that one -- I assume it's essentially for shortish jobs rather than wanting to set up any sort of Internet server.

Tested by creating an access point with a phone so 2 computers on totally different networks.

It's quite good --- combine also with a video / audio connection app then it's a doddle to use.

I used to love teamviewer but then out of nowhere they flagged me for commercial use. I filled out their form and they unblocked me, the next time I used teamviewer app on my phone I got blocked again for no reason. I dealt with the 5 minute limitation and then I got fed up and looked for something else. I would have purchased teamviewer as I love it so much, but it's too expensive for a home user. It's $25 a month which I dont think is reasonable. I would pay like $5 a month. I am not using it heavily.

It surprised me cause I never remoted into anything corporate related or a server or anything like that. Tons of people are reporting the issue online though so I am positive it is a bug or problem with teamviewer. Or it's just a way to get rid of the free version without actually getting rid of it.

Chrome remote desktop is what I went with. It is pretty good. It is free and has no limitations. Highly recommend checking it out. Windows built in quick assist does work, but trying to get people to go through to launch it sometimes can be a pain. Chrome remote desktop has a feature where I can install it and just remote in without any confirmation needed which makes my life much easier. Plus they don't get the free teamviewer prompt dialog box when I disconnect. They get a confirmation pop up when I do connect of course.

It's secured with the google account 2fa and a unique pin for each machine so it is pretty secured. Also it has a mobile app, which is decent unlike the other free solutions I came across. Most of them lack a smartphone app.

The best tool (imo) with easy but flexible gui (especially from mobile phones) is Splashtop.

It does have a nominal charge around £20 per year for access over internet.

It is free to use over LANs.

After reading this thread earlier today, like before lunch, I did some digging. I could not find my old Team Viewer, which I've not used now for several years, so I downloaded a new version.

I also downloaded that "UltraViewer" and installed it.
Seems like a nice enough little program but....it did not seem to have a Peer to Peer file transfer option.
Now for a tech, that's an extremely important function, as I would upload programs to a remote PC, maybe half a world away, and then run the install of those programs on the remote PC.

Then I ran Team Viewer. I was able to upload O.E.Classic, my email program, from this PC to its sister PC in the living room, run the installer, then set up my email account and send an email....all by remote control.
Team Viewer still worked pretty much like I remember it. The install and setup was a real PITA, but once that was done, it was OK.

I've not tried any other of the possible programs, yet, but without P2P File Transfer, any such program would be a Bust!

yup I agree. chrome remote desktop has a file transfer feature. It has pretty much everything the free version of teamviewer offers. Having said that, there are easy workarounds if the program of your choice does not offer it, such as uploading a file to onedrive or google drive or dropbox, and then copying and pasting the share link to the remote computer to download it.

I had to drop 'Dropbox' because they kept deleting the files I uploaded there. They didn't like to see Executables. And it was executables that I wanted to share. With Team Viewer, I can transfer anything.
And for safety, I refuse to use One Drive or any such thing.

probably faster than trying connection between two L.A suburbs. For those not in Engineering or physics an electric current or a beam of light can travel 7 times around the circumference of the earth in a single second (approx 300,000 Km /sec). Even alowing for the fact that by satellite signal needs to travel to geo stationary communication satellites and back to earth (approx 2 X 36,000km) plus through wire and other infrastructure your internet connection should be perfectly good (assuming a decent local ISP).

The only delay you would get is on the audio signal and even then it's fairly insignificant.

The download speed helps but anything over 20mbps is significant. It's more the latency that matters. But remote desktop works pretty much anywhere

yeah your internet I always hear is a challenge. Your upload is better than mine, I have comcast and get 800mbps down and only 20 up. But the connection is pretty solid and low latency for the most part.
