Windows 11
Hi,
1st post here so apologies if I am asking a question that been asked before, I have searched the forum somewhat but I can't find the same problem as mine.

I have a MSI Summit E16 Flip. CPU 12th Gen i7-1280P. Intel Iris Xe graphics.
Windows version 21H2 (Build 22000.795)
Whilst most of the info online relates to problems with people not wanting to have to log on (fingerprint or PIN) when they wake their laptop from sleep, my problem is the opposite - I can't get it to require a log on (PIN or fingerprint). It just boots straight into the last screen as I left it, even if left overnight and unplugged.
I want my laptop to require a logon before it populates the screen and reveals all of my details!
.
After lots of searching, so far I have disabled/stopped facial recognition (Hello).
I do have fingerprints registered, a fingerprint scanner was a requirement on a new laptop so this has to work.
I have a PIN.
From the " When you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?" drop-down list, it is on 'Every Time' and greyed-out so I can't change it even if I wanted to.
From Administrator Command Prompt I get the following:
C:\Windows\system32>powercfg /a
The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected
Hibernate
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Standby (S3)
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Hybrid Sleep
Standby (S3) is not available.
The hypervisor does not support this standby state.

.
I bought the laptop last week so if I can't get this sorted I will return it, which would be a shame as it's quite a nice, simple laptop (I previously had gaming rigs).
I hope I've included all of the details required for one of you decent chaps/lasses to put me out of my misery!

Thanks.
Nylo.

OK, so I'm not as tech savvy as you may think but I think I got what you meant.
I followed option 3. Turn On Require Sign-in on Wakeup to "When PC wakes up from sleep" from Brink tutorial Aug 5, 2021 but nothing changed.
I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing here and a little reluctant to go blasting on when I'm not sure what I'm doing.
My last laptop I managed to create a partition that I could never get rid so I don't want to end up there again.

Thanks. Obv. without installing the software I wasn't able to see that.
I may be naive but it's my opinion that a laptop with a fingerprint scanner should work without the need for 3rd party software (as good as it may be) to enable it and I'd like to try to get this working on it's own merits if I can.

If I can't get this working without that software then I may have to rethink my choice of laptop.
If it's a definite windows problem then I think I'll stick with my old rig until this is sorted with MS. A secure sleep function is important to me as I will be travelling considerably.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what opening sentence means.

I did explain in my opening gambit that I'd already looked at the sign in options in box and it is greyed out.
The dropdown is populated with 'Every Time' though so it seems to be pre-set to how I want it.
Thanks for your help though, it is appreciated, this issue is driving me mad. Made all the worse by the fact that most other complaints are from people who don't want to have to sign in but can't get rid of it. The irony!

You have modern standby. If you have Windows 11 Pro you should be able to use either option 5 or 6 in this tutorial. If you have Windows 11 Home, you will have to use the reg file method in option 6. (To Enable Allow Users to Select when Password is Required when Resuming from Modern Standby)

You should then be able to change your settings as per OPTION 1.

@Brink Am I advising this poster correctly? This modern standby BS confuses me along with everyone else.

Thanks for all the effort. Unfortunately, I ran all of the reg keys but it's still the same - from shutdown to restart it requires PIN/fingerprint but from sleep/hibernate it wakes straight to desktop/last page etc. no PIN or fingerprint requested.
I'm starting to think this is a duff machine. Short of manually shutting down each time I step away the system is completely open.

ETA - when I've been away ... is still greyed out

Agree, no need to use winaero since as you noted the PC should work without it, so let's figure why it's not, instead of masking it with a third-party app that still may not solve the issue.

With that, and for clarity... are you using a Microsoft or local account? Are you the registered user? Just need to be sure where we are.

I did explain in my opening gambit that I'd already looked at the sign in options in box and it is greyed out.
To be clear, you're saying the entire below section as shown is greyed out? Or do you mean certain settings within?

2022-07-21_17-09-08.jpg

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, please post an image of the "Sign-in Options screen with the dropdowns exposed so we may see any messages associated with the various options. This should give a clue to what's going on. Posted image should look like this...

Account Sign-in options.jpg

I bought the laptop last week so if I can't get this sorted I will return it, which would be a shame as it's quite a nice,
And yeah, if things aren't working right, you should have the laptop replaced.

My two cents.

The message that @Dru2 marked in red directly coincides with the following text in Brink's tutorial:
If the Require sign-in setting is grayed out with a Windows hello is preventing some options from being shown message, it means it is not possible to change the Require sign-in setting while Windows Hello (ex: face) is enabled since it is assumed you want to use Windows Hello to sign in every time.

If the Require sign-in setting is grayed out with a Authentication is not required when this PC wakes from sleep message, then it has been disabled by disabling the Require a password when a computer wakes (plugged in) and/or Require a password when a computer wakes (on battery) policies in Option Three or Option Four.

If the Require sign-in setting is grayed out with a Authentication is required when this PC wakes from sleep message, then it has been disabled by enabling the Require a password when a computer wakes (plugged in) and/or Require a password when a computer wakes (on battery) policies in Option Three or Option Four.

If you have Modern Standby and the Require sign-in setting is grayed out without a message in red, then it has been disabled using the Allow users to select a password is required when resuming from connected standby policy in Option Five or Option Six.

A secure sleep function is important to me as I will be travelling considerably.
Just as an FYI-If you will be travelling with this laptop stored in an enclosed case, you need to read all the posts on this forum and across the web that have reported extreme overheating and battery drain when modern standby laptops are stored in a case , some reporting the problem even if the lid is closed on a desk.. It is most common in Dell, Asus, and Lenovo laptops, but a search of the web shows some reports include MSI. The only solution these users have posted is to shut down before storing it or at the very least use hibernate. It is a known problem that no one has found a solution for.

I do not know if your model will exhibit such a problem, but I just wanted you to be aware of it so you can pay attention.

@Brink, is this tutorial still applicable to Windows 11 as the Option One settings aren't available on my Windows 11 Pro (RTM) desktop system (Not Modern Standby capable). Windows "Hello" though, is already enabled - I use facial since my camera supports it. I can also use Pin if the camera doesn't work.

Thanks.

Windows "Hello" though, is already enabled - I use facial since my camera supports it. I can also use Pin if the camera doesn't work.

Thanks.

You would want to use the tutorial below for Windows 11 instead. :-)

Thank you. Couldn't find it. Also, @glasskuter linked to the Windows 10 version. OP needs the Win 11 one.

I apologize. I linked that tutorial because another MVP on Microsoft's Windows 11 forum had linked to it for the same problem. I was unaware a new one had been written for 11.

Tutorial says"it is not possible to change this setting while a facial recognition or fingerprint recognition Windows Hello sign-in option has been added for your account since it is assumed you want to use Windows Hello to sign in every time."

I think that is the root of this problem. The OP disabled facial recognition, but not fingerprint.

Yeah, a lot of stuff written for 10 doesn't aways correspond to Windows 11's settings.
