Solved Another W11 sleep/wake problem

It's a good thing the reg file is exactly the same though. I think it would have un-grayed his options had he not had fingerprint enabled.

Tutorial says"it is not possible to change this setting while a facial recognition or fingerprint recognition Windows Hello sign-in option has been added for your account since it is assumed you want to use Windows Hello to sign in every time."
I saw that; and another reason I asked for the posted image as the "grey out" would be "followed" by that message. Point here is to try and determine what is "actually" going on. Again, why an image would say a lot.

I should explain that the Summit has a physical camera switch on the side, hence why sign in says it can't find a camera.
I have closed/stopped/deleted the facial recog. and also set the switch to off to totally eliminate the Hello as much as poss.

RE "With that, and for clarity... are you using a Microsoft or local account? Are you the registered user? Just need to be sure where we are."
1658480606328.png
I believe that means I'm signing in with my MS account.
I save directly to C: too, I don't use OneDrive if that's of any relevance.

I hope that helps. Once again, I truly appreciate the help and sorry for any delays in responding.

??? There's only one regedit file you have to apply.

Well if one doesn't work, try the other ... no? It was worth a shot.
I have now tried Opt 6 (W11 tutorial), again, didn't work.
1658488577592.png

I have a horrible feeling that this may have developed into user error now! For example, should I use Not_Configured_require_password_on_wakeup (default) or Enable_require_password_on_wakeup out of these 2?
I used Not Configured as it may have never been configured on this thing, when that didn't work I tried Enable_Required ..., this is what I mean by user error. My reg must be in a right 2&8 by now!

Hello Nylo, :-)

Using Disable_require_password_on_wakeup in option six should disable and set require sign-in on wakeup to "Never".

@Brink, but in his case since he wants a password to be required on wakeup, would he not use the Enable_require_password_on_wakeup reg file instead. Also doesn't he also have to disable fingerprint recognition or not?

Ah, ok. Sorry.

That would be correct. It looks like Nylo already has this policy configured from the screenshot below.

With all the finagling done, and given the image now, I don't see anything greyed out, so the OP just needs to setup the appropriate sign-in option - camera, fingerprint, Pin.

But they are already set up. Fingerprints (2) are registered as is the PIN. But the system never asks for it. The only time it asks for a pin/print is after a complete, forced immediate shutdown. After a normal sleep>shutdown, ie natural event, it still opens up straight to desktop with no request for a print or pin.
I'm not sure how to explain it any different so if you have Qs for clarity, please, do ask and I'll answer as well as I can.

I hate to sound redundant, but according to both the Windows 10 tutorial and the Windows 11 tutorial, it says it will not work if Windows Hello is enabled. Beside fingerprint recognition, click Remove. Then scroll down to the "For improved security all Windows Hello sign in for Microsoft accounts on this device" and toggle it off. Then restart your computer, login with pin or password, and the option you need will show up.Until you do that, you will not see the option of "when you've been away when should windows require you to sign in again."

Right, just tried it again after the PC being off all night.
Hello is disabled.
Fingerprints have been removed.
For improved security ... has been toggled to off.
Sleep set to 1min on battery and plugged in.
Laptop turned off then on, and also done a simple 'restart' (at a different time).
The laptop requests a pin (only option now) from off but not from sleep or from hibernate.

1658575819877.png
This means that the only option I have if I walk away from it and want it safe from peeping eyes is to shut it down every time.
That is neither acceptable or convenient.

I do note the comment at the top of the sign in page "Some of these settings are managed by your organization" - I don't know what that is and I'm not in an organization (or an organisation for that matter!), could this be something to do with it?

Also to confirm, whenever I carry my laptop in a bag I do turn it off completely. I'm looking for security when it's left unattended on a desk for example.

Well if one doesn't work, try the other ... no? It was worth a shot.
I have now tried Opt 6 (W11 tutorial), again, didn't work.
Nylo,

I realise I'm late to this party but I cannot see a statement by you that you used Options 1 or 2 of that tutorial. They are the options related to your situation.
Added later - The Options are numbered differently in the Windows 10/11 tutorials. I'm referring to Options 1 or 2 in Enable or Disable Require Sign-in on Wakeup - ElevenForumTutorials

By the way, your computer does not sleep in the sense that we have all come to use the term i.e. S3 Sleep.
S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] is an aggressive idle condition which bears no relation to S3 Sleep. S0 progressively shuts down user-initiated processes. No user-desired activities start, only MS-desired ones such as WU & their built-in email app.

There are, in effect, four Power/Computer states for an S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] computer
- Computer on, Monitor on {Work can be done on the computer}
- Computer on, Monitor off = S0 {The monitor being turned off by Power options initiates S0 Modern standby i.e. idle}.
- Hibernate
- Off

All the best,
Denis

Nylo,

Do you like S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle]?
If not, see Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
- The change is quick & painless and is also easily reversible.
- Many others have reported that disabling S0 automatically re-enabled S3 Sleep on their computers.
- Unfortunately that was not true in my case, I've had to accept that the price of avoiding the cursed S0 is that I only have Hibernation available but that's still better than having S0 disrupt my work merely because I chose to let Power options turn the monitor off if I'm away for a minute.

All the best,
Denis

- Computer on, Monitor on {Work can be done on the computer}
- Computer on, Monitor off = S0 {The monitor being turned off by Power options initiates S0 Modern standby i.e. idle}.
- Hibernate
- Off

All the best,
Denis

Hi Denis,
Yes, I did say I'd done them, or at least done what I could given that certain areas are greyed out so I cannot change them.

Opt1 is Accounts>Sign-In Options> which opens the sign-in screen which has the "If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign is" and the options box is greyed out, I cannot change it. It is however populated with "Every Time" as shown in my screenshot posts.

Opt2 is by editing the registry and I tried the edits (all of them, to glasskuters amusement, post #10). They didn't work.
Thanks for the clarity on how W11 handles sleep. It is different from what I imagined, probably like a lot of others.
I have tried hibernate too but again there was no request for a PIN on resuming.

glasskutter, post #8 might say after applying the .reg file I should be able to change the setting as per Opt1 but I did it and I still can't change it.

It's not Windows 11. It's your hardware's design.

The curse of S0 also exists in Windows 10. Again, it's the hardware design that dictates it.

Ah-Ha (not the group)
I've managed to enable S3:
The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S3)
Hibernate
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Hybrid Sleep
The hypervisor does not support this standby state.

(It was Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected, Hibernate, Fast Startup)
So now I have S3 .... why did I want that? It's been such a trudge I've forgotten, is it a positive step? I'm losing the will to live!

I wrote this post about Registry exports before I saw your last post - we both posted at the same time & you beat me to the draw.

Opt2 is by editing the registry and I tried the edits
I suggest you Export a couple of Registry keys & post them so the possibility that your Registry changes did not run can be considered.
Option 2 Key - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Option 6 key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\0e796bdb-100d-47d6-a2d5-f7d2daa51f51

Assuming you do not already know how to do this:-:
- Run RegEdit, C:\Windows\regedit.exe

- For each of the two keys
- In the address bar at the top, paste in
first run HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
second run HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\0e796bdb-100d-47d6-a2d5-f7d2daa51f51
It does not matter if you paste over the existing entry {which will probably just be the word Computer unless you've already been using RegEdit}.
- Look on the left for the key then right-click on it and select Export
- Give it any filename in any location you want but I suggest browsing to your Desktop and calling them
first run Option 2 Key
second run Option 6 Key
Use the default SaveAsType offered *.reg file Don't be tempted to use the *.txt alternative because the formatting is horrendous.
- You can now close RegEdit
- Assuming File explorer is set to display file extensions, I always then add .txt to the end of the filename to make them inactive so I cannot run them by accident - they end up with names like Option 2 Key.reg.txt. I can always just lope off the .txt in the future if there is ever any need to 'run' a .reg file. Actually, we don't say 'run' for a .reg file but 'merge'.
- Open each file in Notepad and post the contents in this thread. You could just add them as attachments if you prefer but, if you want to do that, do make sure you have added .txt to each filename as I suggested [so that anybody downloading does not get a problem with security recognising a risky file type.

All the best,
Denis
