Any monitor that is doing a graphical task blacks out for 2 seconds randomly

I wonder if I should download the debug tool you all provide but I don't know if this is a problem for that. I have an RTX 2070 that is 5 years old.

I edit photos on Monitor 1, and sometimes I'll have monitor 2 on Youtube or like today I was watching a movie on Hoopla while casually editing photos. Whenever I do something graphical like that, the 2 second blackouts happen more on monitor 1. Today, however, monitor 2 blacked out for the same amount of time.

I had task manager open to the GPU "processes" but the GPU is not showing anything weird and I don't think the usage % is the problem anyway because I have been gaming on this GPU for years. And Lightroom and Hoopla's video viewer are not intensive tasks. But they do both use the GPU. I selected GPU processing in Lightroom to on. I don't know if that's a Lightroom glitch or the GPU.

I did have one of the Display Ports on the GPU go bad and I had to move monitor 1's DP cable to the next adjacent one. I'm assuming that's the problem. Please no. I do not want to have to budget for a new GPU.

This probably won't matter, but which nVidia drivers are you using?

The 581.29 drivers (both Game Ready and Studio), released on 10 September, are supposed to support the RTX 2070.

I just noticed my Oculus VR Quest headset was connected to my computer and every time the monitor blacked out, the little screen in the Oculus would light up then go off. I disconnected it and the black screen is gone.

The blackout just came back even with my oculus disconnected. I use Nvidia drivers 581.29 I downloaded earlier this week.

I was in Nvidia control panel and I noticed G sync is turned on and it reports my monitor BenQ PD2700u as being variable refresh, but I don't think it is. The marketing for this monitor was strictly for color accuracy for photography at $500. It's basically a budget monitor for high quality color accuracy. It has no gaming features as far as I know.

The monitor supports AMD FreeSync. Apparently, nVidia offers some level of support for that in its drivers.


It shows up in the nVidia control panel as G-Sync. I guess AMD hasn't sued nVidia.

Does AMD FreeSync work with NVIDIA graphics cards?

Monitors that support AMD's FreeSync can keep gameplay smooth and tear-free. But what if you have an NVIDIA graphics card?

Well, shucks. I was hoping that would be the issue. It hasn't blacked out since I turned it off though.

Look for an event about the display driver not responding and recovering, which means it was terminated and restarted, which is not normal.
It's usually the sign of an unstable GPU core boost override.

If overclocking the GPU, it 99.9 percent means GPU core clock is too high.
(It looks like video driver timeouts, to me)

I don't do any overclocking of either the CPU or GPU. I did buy this GPU used in 2019 so I wonder if it's the age of it. But if it's been working without problem this long, why would it suddenly stop? I thought CPUs and GPUs last a long time.

FWIW, I have an odd blanking of my monitor when I first built this system, I'm using the RTX 4060 GPU. A new version of the Nvidia drivers did solve my problem, haven't seen the monitors flicker since.

Hey everybody thanks for the replies. Because I had a DP port go out permanently last year, I am just going to assume this is related to that and I'm going to save up for a new GPU anyway. This card was $300 used back in 2019 so it served its purpose over the last 6 years. I'd like to get a new RTX card since I photo edit and I have a small case that can't accommodate a larger card.
