Anyone else seeing their network repeatedly change from private to public?

What I believe causes this is the internet provider monitors the usage on how much data a person uses on the internet with a particular computer. If above a certain amount they kick you off of the private network or they throttle the connection down.

Really to tell what is really happening one has to monitor the incoming data and know what that data is and how it affects one computer in real time.

There are most likely several techniques to try and shot gun the problem and of course the master technique of resetting the Operating system. To me this is a waste of time, especially thinking we have these powerful computers that should be capable to troubleshoot a problem down to the exact cause.

how are you settng it to private? if you're using the toggle and its not working try using powershell

In an admin powershell prompt:

Powershell:
$network = Get-NetConnectionProfile
Set-NetConnectionProfile -Name $network.Name -NetworkCategory Private

What happens to me is more random. few and far between, then all the time.

So, while I am on the internet and have a solid connection all of a sudden it will switch to public.

I just rebooted the modem/router, and I get connected again with private.

At first, I could not find the toggle to switch back to private. The way it is on my computer is one can go to settings and then to network internet.

One would expect to then see the toggle but no it is not there even in advance setting.

One has to go to properties at the top of the page and click on it.

Then one would expect to then see the toggle, but no one has to scroll up the page to see the toggle.

I have had one provider company admit to me that they slowed my connection down even when I had unlimited download on my account. They slowed it below 2Mbps. That is when one can no long stream any video. I got it corrected after it was brought to the attention of people higher up.

If you have Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition installed, you could use the Local Security Policy like in option eight of the tutorial below to specify Public or Private to prevent it from changing.

I'm having this same issue with Windows 11 Pro in our office. We scan from our printer via SMB. I have the printer and all computers on fixed IP's at the router level. (Unify gear). When I setup the computers I setup them up to the network and mark it as private. Then something makes it flip. I'm not sure if it's Windows updates, computer reboots, network reboots, etc.

What I did find is that under your step 7, in the registry, that there was several networks with the same name with a number added. N+1. So I found a profile for "Network" and then "Network 2" "Network 3", etc... Sometimes up to 4-5 of the same network. I don't know why it's making a new profile.

But the issue seems to be that when it connects to the network it's picking a profile that just defaults to public. Scanning doesn't work.

I need a way to either stop if from creating additional profiles or to set all new profiles to private.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

Does using step 7 in option 8 below make them all Private by default?

Thanks for the warm (and quick!) welcome.

It did not change it for all of them, just the original (non-numbered one). I wish I could just set it so all secured networks could be set to private.

I'm in a holding pattern. When I fired up my PC today, the problem had magically resolved itself. I'll have to wait for it to happen before I can test anything further.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

And unfortunately, in step 3, you don't have the option to set All Networks to public/private. You can only set the user access to change it.

Hello, :alien:

Yeah, I see the same now for All Networks in step 3 option 8.

Does setting the location for Identifying Networks and/or Unidentified Networks have it used by default instead for you?

It did not change any of the other known networks (or the N+1 names). Maybe this will fix it in the future for new N+1 names though.
