I think he meant a cloud provider. MS offers Cloud PC in O365, and a separate Azure VM plan.
The problem is most offerings are designed for companies, and not individuals who want a few months of service.

@Bree, your suggestions continue to enlighten me to things I was unaware of. Thank you. Using this will be a real time-saver for testing some themes I've been playing around with. This VM is especially interesting to me as it already includes Ubuntu in Windows sub-system for Linux.

Hi there
@Bree
I'm confused here since it mentions FREE but then PAY as you go to access FREE services and at some point that 200 USD of Free credit needs to be paid for in actual cash -- or have I mis-understood stuff here.

This seems a contradiction in terms (mind you the Azure site is in US ENG which itself can be a bit of a dogs dinner) : Move to PAY as you go for FREE monthly amounts .... ??????

Screenshot_20221207_094628.png

If it's 100% Free as in FREE then could be interesting.
Cheers

Linus tech tips recently did a video tour of a cloud based computer company, providing a completely cloud based hardware and software solution, might be worth a look. I have no idea about pricing and availability but it did seem to cater for all sizes of customer. I beleive the host of the video was Luke, early this week.

I logged in, got myself to the "Create a virtual machine" area, and it's asking me for money, and when I go to "Credits remaining" - I don't see any, even tho I haven't used any yet. I do see in Bree's post, that there is a $200 credit, but my fear is since the $ amt requested is almost half of that already, I am going to get nailed for a large $ amt after the fact.

You can download a free virtual machine from Microsoft.

TY again.

I have d/l-ed two of the four, and have filenames ending with: .ova .ovf .mf and .vmdk - and I have no idea what to do with them. I do see "File hashes" on the page, but again, not sure what to do here.

Searched diff terms, but couldn't find anything.

Have emailed a couple of other cos.

Cheers.

Years ago, I accepted an invitation to try out Azure for free. I forgot the details, but I still remember the general picture. I got a machine with very little muscle and would have to pay for more muscles. After looking around for a few days, I bailed out.

Nonetheless, Windows 365 Cloud PC (which is pre-packaged Azure, from the very small to the very big) made me excited again, but the pricing is still not right for me, maybe it is for others.

For free with Azure for 12 months, you get the following with respect to vm's

1670561996555.png

Had you picked a B1s burstable machine, it is free, up to 720 hours in a month's time. The cost shows you the share once you exceed that time allotment.
Sites like Azure and AWS are for businesses and projects, not necessarily enthusiats playing around with computers.

Hi there
If you want to play around with VM's it's easy to make them yourself and I think Ms even has some directly downloadable to your local PC.

The Azure cloud service is really designed for businesses etc - and usually any sort of "Trials" Free or otherwise are designed for I.T pros possibly evaluating a feasabilty study in moving local I.T infrastructure / apps to a cloud managed facility.

As others have posted - this type of stuff is primarily aimed at commercial customers (even small ones) but not intended for home hobbyists wanting to try out various forms of VM's etc.

Cheers
