This is a unhelpful statement. Your argument is "It works for me, therefore if it does not work for you, you must have done something that is causing it to go wrong". There could be lots of reasons why it is not installing e.g. file corruption or the installer has bugs etc. You cannot just assume it is PEBCAK.

Sorry, but I don't see this as a gripe thread. There is quite a bit of good information, which has been helpful.

In fact, I now have a free year Aomei Pro because someone posted a link.

BTW, I do not tweak my system, ever, so that's not why I was having trouble installing.

I think your problem was caused by a corrupted file that happened when you first tried to install Aomei. The good thing is that you were able to remove it with Revo.

Right click exe and go to properties for all installers and Unblock the them before running and apps install better.

Most likely, Winuser.

I do know that once I removed everything Aomei with Revo from both Windows 10 and Windows 11, things worked as they should and installation was a piece of cake.

Revo Uninstaller is a great program. The best part is where it searches for left over files and entries in the Registry so they can be deleted.

Revo is brilliant, even after it has found the leftovers it is still worth doing a manual scan and you will still find a few things left over. I use the Search Everything tool (it's free) and search for the program name and then the company name

I did my first Aomei restore yesterday. It worked great.

BTW, is there a Windows 11 tutorial on Aomei? If we have one on Macrium, shouldn't we have one on Aomei since there seem to be quite a few folks who swear by it?

What I sometimes do to test if a restore work is to create a virtual hard drive, then restore to that. You van go one stage further and create a boot entry for the vhd and boot into it. This is a very safe way to test restoring without affecting main installation.

Re. AOMEI tutorial, it is hard to write these (@Kari did Reflect ones, but has yet to update due to illness).

It is easier to record a video, but there are lots of guides on youtube. TBH AOMEI is pronably easier for beginners but lacking overall flexibility of Reflect).

Maybe a project for one of your students?

I was messing around trying to get my Hyper-V VM working yesterday and did a system restore using a Macrium image. I used Aomei to make a backup first. After I found that the VM still didn't work I used Aomei to revert back.

I'm thinking Aomei would be easier for my students to learn. Most of them have laptops with "only one partition", so not much flexibility is necessary.

I have a Sabrent USB 3 to SATA docking station. Could I restore to a drive in that? And then connect it to my computer to see if it works?

It is harder to make an external usb drive bootable.

What I think you can do is create a virtual hard drive on external drive (easy from disk management), restore image to that vhd from AOMEI, and then add a boot entry for that vhd. I am just testing it to check it works. If it does, I can show key steps.

Problem with only one drive and no separate partitions, you have to make backup to an external drive - you cannot backup to same partition being used to create the backup. Even backing up to a second partition on same drive is risky because if drive fails, you lose backup.

For your students, I would use an external usb drive. Ok they may need to buy one...

I use AOMEI and I backup to the secondary HDD in my system. It goes faster than using an external drive through USB. The other systems that only have one internal drive get backed up to an external HDD. I would never backup to the primary drive.
