OS
Win 11
Built a new PC
AMD Ryzen 5000 based system - 5800X, Gigabyte Aorus X570 Master Rev 1.2, 3080ti, 32Gb DDR4 3200Mhz.
Very latest AMD Chipset drivers, everything is updated. Bios version F34 (the F35e beta BIOS is not recommended, with many users have more problems)

Been getting totally random PC freeze/reboots without BSOD errors - when I reboot back into Win 11 and check the Event Viewer, these reboots are always preceeded by the Event ID:56 error.

I did a fresh install (on a brand new NVME) of the latest public release ISO on a USB drive.
The only component I took from my old PC to this one is a Startech USB 3.0 expansion card - PEXUSB3S44V

There were no such errors reported in Event Viewer when this card was in the Win 10 based Intel system.

As of now I am getting near constant errors in device manager, and these happen regardless of whether any devices are plugged into any of the USB ports on the card or not.
Some investigation led me to a consistent aspect of these errors, which seem related to one of the ports on the expansion card - the Event errors indicate a PCI issue that I have narrowed down to a specific port.

Looking through other forums, it would seem that this specific error seems to be common on both Intel and AMD based Win 11 PC's.
Some have tried various BIOS related options, which have been successful for many - it's been quite a few days since I had a reboot/freeze event so I'm hopeful that these steps have had some impact.
Essentially the steps involved turning off all C-States and enabling an option in the BIOS called 'power loading'.
The posts (reddit) mentioned something about C-States causing instability in the system. And the Gigabyte BIOS has a power loading option to possibly address the issue of C-States causing PSU to trigger a shut down under certain circumstances.

I'm hoping that these BIOS changes will resolve the random reboots, but am still very concerned about the sheer volume of Event ID:56 errors that specifically state:
"The description for Event ID 56 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer."

Attaching screen snip showing just how many of these errors occur, and this is only a fraction of the day.

PS - I tried putting the USB expansion card back in my Intel PC, and no such errors, which point to Win 11 being the problem here.

Looking at different sites that sell this, there are numerous complaints of it not working, locking up the computer, and other assorted issues.
As was said in many reviews "it was a cheap replacement...."

As with anything in life, buyer beware.

You should replace this item with a different one from another manufacturer.

You mean the Startech USB card was a 'cheap' option?
It's actually one of the best and most expensive USB3.0 expansion cards for several reasons:

1. Each of the 4 ports has it's own dedicated USB controller, unlike all the other cheap cards (Inatek etc) that often have 7 USB ports that all use the SAME USB controller - this defeats the main reason people buy them, which is that their motherboard USB controllers can't manage the shared bandwidth, especially when using high resolution VR HMD's like Reverb G2 ( 2160x2160 PER EYE - what I use), Pimax 8K+ etc

2. It is designed for PCIe x4 slots (cheap Inatek cards often use the litte PCIe x1 slots which have much lower PCIe lanes)

3. It is powered directly by the PSU using it's own dedicated SATA power connector

So, what might you suggest? Appreciate any forum links that support why a different expansion card is better.
Cheers!

not sure of a replacement, but if its one of the best, why did they orient the ports so they get blocked and cant be used? (many complaints of that in reviews)

I guess it depends on the case. Most newer cases don't have metal strips to separate PCI rear slots, they just have the removable covers.
I currently use a LianLi PC-011D and I can remove the covers and it's just one large space.
My old cheap Phanteks case $75) also had no issues. Could access all ports without issue.
These are complaints that are focused on physical design/shape which I don't think is at all relevant to the issues I was having.
Fixed them by turning off C-states in BIOS oddly enough. Hopefully newer BIOS versions resolve these issues.

I can see it was an expensive expansion card. However, on the Startech site both their latest driver and firmware are dated 2012. It is still being sold today, though. Maybe @Scott can tell you what version driver he is using.

I would like to share some info about this EventID, i've experienced it too since upgrading to Win11, on my Intel based machine this error was popping several times a day, even after i updated bios to newest, which was released recently, also all my hardware is new, no pieces from older pc's. Couple days ago i've noticed that Intel ME firmware on Gigabyte site was not the latest that intel was released, and after manually update ME Firmware i haven't seen this error for two days already

The events have returned, and had two full system crashes in one day.
Then days can go by without issue.
I decided to update the card to the latest version by Startech, which has 4 USB 3.1/3.2 ports, supported by dual ASM3142 controller with 20GB/s bandwidth - no longer 'Renesas', which I understand no longer has Intel support on the driver front, so at the mercy of whatever Microsoft serves up.
It was expensive, but I've spent more money over the years trying to save a buck on $20-50 cards that end up being useless for my specific needs.
I'm hoping that the PCI errors stop.

I did see that the new card mentioned it 'installs in PCIe Gen 2 slots', which got me thinking that I should change the version of the PCI slots (excluding the main x16 slot that is used for GPU) to Gen 2 instead of 'Auto'.
Didn't make any difference.
