Folder_views_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to apply view settings of a folder to all folders for your account in Windows 11.

You can change the folder view settings in Windows 11 to what you want for each separate folder.

View settings for a folder include the template, columns, column width, Group by, Sort by, and layout view.

If you like, you can apply the view settings of a folder to all folders at once without needing to manually apply one by one.

Here's How:

1 Specify a default template for all folders to be optimized for a General items (details view), Documents, Pictures, Music, or Videos type you want for them.

2 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

3 Open a folder you want to apply its view settings to all folders.

4 Customize this folder's columns, column width, Group by, Sort by, and layout view settings to how you want.

5 Click/tap on the See more (3 dots) button on the command bar, and click/tap on Options. (see screenshot below)

Apply_to_Folders-1.png

6 Click/tap on the View tab, and click/tap on the Apply to Folders button. (see screenshot below)

If you have This PC or a library open, Apply to Folders will be grayed out.

Apply_to_Folders-2.png

7 Click/tap on Yes to confirm. (see screenshot below)

Apply_to_Folders-3.png

8 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

That's it,

I tried this and it did work for all of the folders with the exception of The Downloads Folder. Is the downloads folder treated differently than the others?

It may not work for all shell folders.

In that situation, those will have to be set manually. :(

Apply to all folders is greyed out for anything I have in a library - including all of the sub-folders in the library, so I change my settings, but then I might have 50 sub-dirs, and they are all setup wrong, how can I apply to all like that?

Hello, :-)

Once upon a time, you were used to be able to change the folder view in a library, and it would automatically get applied to all folders in the library. All folders in a library used to share the same folder view. It's been a while since then though.

If this may work for you, you are still able to change the folder template of a folder in a library, and apply to all subfolder like in option 1 below.

To apply to all folders in a library using option 1 below, you can open the library, and continue with option 1.

This is not the same as a custom folder view, but it will at least have a common base template for them.

Can you change the default settings for a template? because if not I'm not sure how that is really useful unless the settings I wanted looked like the template settings?

Not that I'm aware of for Libraries other than switching between the default General items, Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos templates.

Ah ok. This seems like really bad design. Is there an alternative way of grouping content like libraries, without using libraries? I use them because I keep everything on a separate store drive, so after an install I just tell it to look there for the libraries and boom done. But my OCD can't cope with every folder looking different.

I suppose you could use any target location (ex: users folder), and create symbolic links like below of source folders to the target folder to access them from. This way you can use the method in this tutorial to apply to all folders.

So lots of things try to use Documents, changing the library location of the Documents folder lets me get everything there easily - would I create a symbolic link between the /users/documents dir and my vault/documents dir, and it kinda works the same way?

Thanks

I've decided to just hide libraries from the sidebar, use winaero tweaker rename 'quick access / change the icon', and put links to everything there. But for some reason quick access keeps dissappearing from the sidebar, and now i've got 'documents' there..

It would be best to go ahead and create a new thread in the forum for this issue since it's unrelated to this tutorial. :(

Please note that the steps in this tutorial will not reset file open/save dialog views for any previously opened folder.

That's the most likely reason why reply #2 stated that the procedure did not work for the Downloads folder. That is, @Josey Wales was probably looking at a file dialog for the Downloads folder. Without additional software, the file dialog views must be changed manually, one folder at a time, by right-clicking in the white space and setting the desired view options.

Another related point is that, in Windows 10 (and possibly earlier releases of Windows 11), only the root of the Downloads folder is type Downloads. Therefore, the view change for subfolders of Downloads depends on the settings for General items, Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. In Windows 11, currently, the Downloads folder type applies to all subfolders of Downloads (but I'm not sure if this is a bug or intentional).

Note: WinSetView can be used to set all folder views globally, including file dialogs, libraries, search results, and so on.

That post was from 2021, I do not even remember what build I was on then. 🤷‍♂️

Yup, I know. The issue with file dialog views not getting updated via "Apply to Folders" is true from Windows 7 to the latest Windows 11 build. In 2021, File Explorer in Windows 11 was mostly the same as Windows 10, so it's likely that "Apply to Folders" would have only applied to the root of Downloads at that time.
