General Apply Folder View to All Folders of Same Template Type in Windows 11

  • Staff
Folder_views_banner.png

You can change the folder view settings in Windows 11 to what you want for each separate folder.

View settings for a folder include the template, columns, column width, Group by, Sort by, and layout view.

If you like, you can apply the view settings of a folder to all folders of the same template type all at once without needing to manually apply one by one.

This tutorial will show you how to apply view settings of a folder to all folders of the same template type for your account in Windows 11.

Here's How:

1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Open a folder using a template (ex: "General items") type you want to apply its view settings to all folders of the same same type.

3 Customize this folder's columns, column width, Group by, Sort by, and layout view settings to how you want.

4 Click/tap on the See more (3 dots) button on the command bar, and click/tap on Options. (see screenshot below)

Apply_to_Folders-1.png

5 Click/tap on the View tab, and click/tap on the Apply to Folders button. (see screenshot below)

Apply_to_Folders-2.png

6 Click/tap on Yes to confirm. (see screenshot below)

Apply_to_Folders-3.png

7 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Apply_to_Folders-4.png

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hi

Is there a method that you can set a default view and type for windows as a default in it's entirety (that can later be edited as and when needed as how in this thread and the other), rather than each folder at a time.

Reason I ask this when working in a lot of application that use wav audio files the view will always default to:

1644275653705.png

When all I need regardless of the folder, drive, usb and core content file type is the following including the type and group settings:

1644275710025.png

Have searched the forums and web - I'm hitting a wall. Constantly updating folder views in workflow would be much improved my end.

Thanks

M

Hello M, :-)

You could use the method in the tutorial below to apply a folder view to all folders, and still be able to change the folder view of individual folders later.

Great will get to it in the morning. Thank you - totally missed it.

Doesn't work - this is the method I tried historically.
As soon as I change to a folder ie music album the headings automatically change the view to:

1644282516597.png

From the previous folder which I used to set the attributes in the thread to:

This is normal when you change the folder template. The folder view will then match the template you selected.

If you want all templates to have the same folder view, then you'll need to repeat the tutorial below for each template.

The tutorial below has you set all folders to use a specific template, make the folder view changes you want, and then apply them to all folders since all folders are using the same template. Change to a different template will not have the same folder views.

Ah now I get it so each folder type is essentially a template by default. 😁

Windows 10 and 11 Pro (Win 11 unable to reinstall due to latest MS issue)
Sorry Brink - I'm still struggling.
The core application uses windows explorer pop up window when importing/opening audio files.
Ive set up the defaults for as many folders as I can in windows which sees to be ok ie mp3 folders, wav fodlers, jpegs, movie files etc.

The issue I have is when opening a file to search for from within the application (cubase in this case but also other program applications) windows is not remembering the format.
It appears to need resetting for each and every individual folder. ie:

Opens fine
1644337764689.png

Go to another folder of the same file type (template) and it's reset until I do this again which is what I want to avoid:
1644337806151.png

You see the #/tiltle/contributor etc for audio files has reset,

Surely theres a way (even dare I say via registry) regardless of which folder type is opened from which ever route windows/application for a default view to be presented always.
Or Im I seeking something that is simply not possible?

Thanks again for your time and help.

Is this on a removable drive by chance?

If so, a removable drive will not always remember folder view settings.

I'm having this problem too. I've set my preferred templates, but when I open a directory in a removable / remote location, or a compressed (.zip) file, it opens in Micro$oft's default layout, not my preferred layout. And if I change the layout to suit my preferences, it reverts to Microsoft's layout next time.

IMPORTANT: I need a command-line solution, one that I can put in my ConfigureWindows.bat file so it will be automatically applied to every computer I configure.
