Are 5.25" case apertures obsolete?

I settled on a Corsair Carbide 200R and found that Currys had them for free delivery or pickup at the local store. I have a big roll of sound deadening material which I can attach to various parts inside.

Good you found a satisfactory solution. (y)

The Corsair arrived yesterday, pretty quick for this time of year. It is lighter weight than my others, but the build quality is very good, and there is a removable dust filter for the psu at the bottom rear. The case has 3 external 5.25" apertures, and I have put the dvd in the top and the spare 3.5" drive, an Orico in the bottom. I do have a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor to cater for SSD's. The case has lots of holes, most of which have been covered by my sound deadening material. Now all the airflow has to go in the front and exit rear top. Front and rear fans are 120mm which will be more than adequate for an Athlon 3000G which only uses 35 watts, and is providing the graphics.
I used a Samsung 850 PRO 256Gb for this build and have installed W10 pro 64, which activated straight away.
So far the PC Health Check is telling me that the Athlon isn't compatible with W11, strange as their list of AMD processors includes it and I am currently using one in this beta channel machine with W11. I may use my w11 dvd and just update in a few days anyway.

If you don't have a use for that third bay, you can find a nice drawer for it to hold your USB sticks, spare keys and whatnot. I do miss that on my case with no-bays. But I have a 360 radiator pulling in from the front now.

The AMD 3000G is a Windows 11 supported CPU. The support pages for the Asrock A320M-HDV r4.0 offer Windows 11 drivers.

Do you have fTPM turned on in the BIOS settings, as well as Secure Boot? Is the Windows drive GPT? Not sure why the PC Health Check is failing.

@tinmar49 Missed this completely :scream: but thought I leave the suggestion here to help others

Yes I agree that decent non gaming cases are getting harder to find - I use a UK system builder at Poole In Dorset, Chillblast and although they would obviously prefer to sell you a prebuilt or custom system I'm certain that they would consider selling a case only I can recommend their Silent Workstation with two front drive bays and full length front cover that produces a simple Matt Black case - Not an RGB light system in sight ... They do the full range of RGB systems too

Sorry, barman, like most members, I am guilty of missing some replies.
This new build is almost the same spec as my W11 machine which is listed on the forum except that the motherboard Is a Gigabyte A320M-H, and the SSD is a Samsung 850 PRO 2.5". TPM is enabled and only the 3000G is being mentioned in the Pc health check. I know the 3000G is compliant and had bought it with that in mind. There have been other threads with similar problems in the W10 forum as I recall.
I will double check the bios and have the pdf on the other machine running as Gigabyte no longer supply a printed manual.

Two points I picked up on in this thread, one is like a previous poster I also have an Epson combo 5.25"/3.5" floppy drive if needed with my older clients when they find disks and want to know what is on them and the other is newer motherboards may not have the familiar port for those drives. I was given an older computer for parts [but got it fixed anyway] which has a Cooler Master case, one of the front slots contains a device for plugging in a 3.5" HDD, a "hot swap" type dock.

I have two 5.25" front panel slots and I have a 3.5" drive caddy in the top one, I did intend to use the lower of the two for a small Drawer for USB Pen Drives etc but unfortunately the way that the piping is routed for the processor cooler means I cannot fit the unit in, until I find the time to re route. The fitting of the caddy is a great time saver as I can grab a bare drive, (I also have a tool-less 2.5-3.5 adaptor) and slot it into the desktop for testing etc, I have tool-less external 3.5" USB3 cases but this is so much easier.

@barman58, you reminded me that I should have mentioned the dock in mine is for SATA drives only, not the 40pin/80conductor PATA drives.

Not seen a PATA caddy in many years, I vaguely recall having a test system with a dual SATA / PATA caddy where the connections meant that the one kind of drive mounted upside down. It was
handy when you were getting both types randomly but was not that hardy so didn't last long

I threw my last one out not long ago, had a PATA ODD in it and was for a Parallel Port, everything's gone to USB.

If you don't have a use for that third bay, you can find a nice drawer for it to hold your USB sticks, spare keys and whatnot. I do miss that on my case with no-bays. But I have a 360 radiator pulling in from the front now.
I never thought about getting drawers for the empty 5.25" bays. I have room for 2 if I ever need them. I saved one on my Amazon account to purchase when I'm ready to do something else to my system that requires I crack it open. Thanks for suggesting it in this thread!

My previous PC (custom build Ryzen 2700x system) had plenty of 5.25" bays and I had one Blu-ray drive in there. When I built my new system in April this year I decided I wouldn't have any SATA drives of any kind nor wanted 5.25" drive bays any more. I haven't any regrets in taking this approach.

I recently found another 3.5 and 2.5 dual that fits into 5.25 bay. Been looking for a while, they are quite scarce here. It is great time and hassle saver. I have two of these.

I have one of these as well. I use it for back ups once a week without any problems. I just turn it on before booting up when needed. The back up drives are in the bay most of the time and the unit has anti vibration mounts for the drives.

I dont think there are anti vibration mounts on mine, unless that is what those side flaps do.

My Akasa looks similar to the picture by SIW2, including the USB3 sockets, and there is a lock for the 2.5, but not the 3.5. My other pc's have a single 3.5 and I have an adaptor box to fit which holds the 2.5.
