Are the BIOS Firmware Updates also included along with the Windows Updates?

Sometimes, on occasion, I would use my laptop without plugging in the power charger into my laptop.

I would like to ask if the BIOS Firmware updates are also included and installed automatically along with the Windows Updates that show up in the Windows Updates settings or do they appear under the Advanced Options >>> Optional Updates?

I just do not want a BIOS firmware update running in the background and all of a sudden my laptop would reboot...

In that case, will it give a warning notification to plug in my laptop to a power charger to complete the BIOS updates?

I don't own a laptop nor do I get drivers and bios through WU so I really do not know. But I would not bet that it would tell you to plug it in nor do I think it would warn you to first disable bitlocker/drive encryption either.

If you're worried about a crash and want to completely prevent Windows from touching your BIOS:
On laptops (for example, Dell or HP), the BIOS settings often have an option called UEFI Capsule Updates via Windows Update - set it to Disabled.

I just need to know if at least there would be a warning notification that I need my laptop to be plugged in to the power charger when a BIOS update pushes out for my laptop.

Don't really want to mess with the BIOS settings to be honest.

This is strictly IMHO, but I wouldn't let Windows Update have anything to do with a bios firmware update. If I was going to do one, I'd definitely have the laptop plugged into the power while completing it.

I would like to ask if the BIOS Firmware updates are also included and installed automatically along with the Windows Updates that show up in the Windows Updates settings or do they appear under the Advanced Options >>> Optional Updates?
In my experience for Dell and Lenovo they are optional. Optional updates may install automatically though if you have 'Get the latest updates as soon as they're available' turned on in Windows Update.

I'll have to wait for the next one to test that.....

This is strictly IMHO, but I wouldn't let Windows Update have anything to do with a bios firmware update.
For my Dell, at least, BIOS firmware updates by Windows Update has been completely reliable....

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

No. You will only see an entry for the BIOS update in Windows Update > Update History > Driver Updates. Do NOT run the update unless your power is plugged in.

The 'Dell Command | Update' app is a Dell utility that's pre-installed in an OEM Dell install of Windows and handles all Dell-related updates.

Dell said:
Dell Command | Update (DCU) is a standalone application for commercial client computers that provides updates for system software Dell releases. This application simplifies the BIOS, firmware, driver, and application update experience for Dell commercial client hardware.

But Dell also supply their drivers and firmware to Microsoft so that those of us who have a clean install with none of Dell's bloatware will still get our updates through Windows Update.

If I don't catch the BIOS update early enough on the Dell Support site it will pop up in Windows Update, occasionally before it even shows up on the Dell Support site. I can always pick and choose which way I want to get it between the two though.

In my experience for Dell and Lenovo they are optional. Optional updates may install automatically though if you have 'Get the latest updates as soon as they're available' turned on in Windows Update.

I'll have to wait for the next one to test that.....

For my Dell, at least, BIOS firmware updates by Windows Update has been completely reliable....

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad and the Get the latest updates as soon as they're available' is turned OFF.

So this means the BIOS updates will show up under the Optional updates section?

Yes. I have had Lenovo Thinkpads, and that's how they got their BIOS updates. They're now of an age where no further BIOS updates are likely, though. Which Thinkpad model do you have?
