Are these SMART data normal for a brand new HDD?

Just bought a Seagate ironwolf pro 8 TB and running some tests.

I'm too noob to interpret the SMART stats, are there any concerns in the image? idk why Victoria is showing some 4 yellow dots for some areas vs. 5 greens.

I suggest you register the item with Seagate so you can then claim on the warranty that it is defective & include your diagrams as evidence.
That will put the onus on Seagate to explain the data. And do post back to explain what they say, it's likely to be interesting.

Best of luck,
Denis

Looks fine to me. It only has 5 start/stop times and 14 hours of power on*, so it is new. With Seagate drives, the raw read error rates are always high and not significant, so ignore them. What counts is the reallocated sector count, which is 0.

*How many hours have you had it on? does 14 sound right?

This is what they said:

From what I can see, the SMART attributes on your drive actually look normal for a new Seagate 8TB disk. Some of the values, like Raw Read Error Rate or Seek Error Rate, tend to look unusually high on Seagate drives because the raw numbers are vendor specific and don’t represent real "errors" the way the name suggests. What really matters is the normalized value, and yours are all well above the thresholds. Also, there are zero reallocated sectors, zero pending sectors, and no signs of mechanical issues, which is exactly what you want to see on a healthy new HDD.
You can find the normalized values in the “Current” column (in CrystalDiskInfo) or the “Value” column (in Victoria). Those numbers are the ones that tell you the actual health of each SMART attribute. For example, ID 01 has a normalized value of 83, which is healthy. The RAW numbers can look huge on Seagate drives, but that’s normal what matters is that the normalized values stay high and above the threshold.

From Amazon (shipped and sold by Amazon) and said brand new. Drive date on sticker says made in Jan 2026, and was wrapped in antistatic bag. the power on count & power on hours is from me running Test on the drive, overnight.

No, those hours are all me. I had leave the computer on overnight running a bunch of diagnostic scan etc.. I want to make sure it looked good on paper before I put data on this drive.

Here is an old document from Seagate that might help explain a few things about how to correctly interpret S.M.A.R.T. data for Seagate HDDs:

The raw data from CrystalDiskInfo indicates that your IronWolf Pro performed 203,269,042 (i.e., the "0C1DA3B2" part of the hexadecimal raw value) reads with 0 (i.e., "0000") read failures. Similarly, it also indicates that the drive performed 5,186,180 ("004F2284") seeks with 0 seek failures.

The drive's Current temperature is 39 ("0027") degrees Celsius, and the Worst case Coldest Temperature is 23 ("0017") degrees Celsius.

The airflow temperature raw data value ("000027210027") has to be split into 4 parts, from right to left:
  • Current Temperature in degrees Celsius = 39 ("0027")
  • Lowest temperature recorded during this power cycle = 33 ("21")
  • Highest temperature recorded during this power cycle = 39 ("27")
  • Number of Times attribute below Threshold (i.e. “High Temperature” conditions) = 0 ("0000")
Maybe the reason why Victoria shows some of its health ratings in yellow is because it is a yellow software?

I wonder a little bit why nobody mentions the Seagate FARM log (Field Access Reliability Metrics) which is said to be more difficult to fake than the smart values. Since the last events with faked / "refreshed" disks sold as new ones isn't too long ago (and possibly ongoing) this should still considered though there are reports that even this log can be faked / rewritten now....

The farm log might give you a second / independent log of Power on Hours, Spindle Power on Hours, Head Flight Hours, Head Load Events and Power Cycle Count (and a lot more):

(For Windows:
Code:
smartctl.exe --scan
scans for devices
Code:
smartctl.exe -l farm /dev/sde
shows the farm- log for /dev/sde)
