Maybe so, but when you're only a web surfer, it's really hard to tell the difference. If I were doing CAD Work, I would probably see some difference, but I'm not really sure.

I run Win 11 on a fairly modern machine (TPM 2, native NVMe, UEFI, DDR4) and it's a complete PITA. If this is supposed to be intelligent optimization please bring back the organics! At this rate I may as well go back to MBR and Legacy.

My Windows 11 machine is mainly used for Citrix, but it feels much snappier doing anything, than after fresh install, 3x months ago.

Nothing wowee about the spec, Xeon 2680 v4, 32gb DDR4 2400mhz, nvme drive, Quadro M4000 8gb graphics.

Unless the ancient old gfx card, really is that good, at 2D.

I wished I would have known more about the Xeon's when I built my Asus socket 1366 machine a few years ago, I would have bought a socket 2011 board, so I could have used a better/faster Xeon. Those boards and those 2680 v4 Xeon processors are still not cheap. Well I just looked on eBay, the processor is not bad at all now.

Windows 11 is great as desktop OS!
With TrueNAS and 10 Gbps network I enjoy very fast and safe working and gaming space. First thing after fresh Windows 11 installation on m.2 is firewall, which blocks everything except Windows Update. Documents and media are on NAS so only one extra m.2 drive is required, for profiles, "My Documents" and "ProgramData". Since most mainboards have two m.2 slots, it is perfect configuration. Essential to keep user and program profiles on non-system partition. Privacy hardened with free O&O ShutUp10, which disables many Windows spyware mechanisms, just in case, even when blocked by firewall.
Environmental variables are godsent... they allow to change folder location without modification of links.
Links between folders are extremely usefull, one can quickly jump between places like My Documents, ProgramData, profiles, NAS folders, etc.
Original start menu is garbage. With Start11 I compose my own whole-screen-start-menu with tabs with links (powered by environmental variables).I can have start menu with 15 categorized tabs (tools, games, windows, folders, etc), every tab is capable to fit 80 link icons!
AutoHotKey is genius! You can have per-program keyboard shortcuts with #HotIf directive. Image every tool or game customized with own shortcuts! With Logitech G815/G915 keyboard 5 GKeys and 3 memory buttons you may have 15 customizable single-key keyboard shortcuts independent from ALT, CTRL and SHIFT. To be even more independent from ALT, CTRL and SHIFT, I combine GKeys and AutoHotKey to utilize virtual function keys F13-F24 for keyboard events. There were keyboards in the past with 24 function keys. Modern keyboards have only 12 function keys, but ISO standard still contains F13-F24 keyboard codes.

I should say, my experiences are also based on Win 1123H2.

Seen no reason to update yet.

My "non compatible" hardware, is not Copilot aware, and have no interest in it, either.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

That's the same with me. If I really want to test a feature in my Insider VM, vivetool is the way to go! On my stable installations I try to limit any unnecessary third party modifications.

The X99E-WS is a 2011 board but I went with the 6900K chip. Sadly, that chip is not on Windows compliant list for Windows 11.

It's a beautiful board but evidently it's just too archaic.

That board is $300.00 and up on Flea Bay, as an "old" retired or at least semi-retired dude, I can't justify that in this life.

Wow. That cheap already. The board used to cost over 1K in Canukistan currency. I didn't pay quite that much because I got it on a Black Friday deal. I shudder to think what a brand new comparable work station board like this would run me today. I'm slotted in the same position as you, with four dependants and one foot in the grave. lol :winkt:

Been with with Dell ex corp machines, with Windows COA sticker/in BIOS, for as long as I can remember.

Free, licensed Windows, is my priority,

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
I had Microsoft Works running on my Laptop not too long ago.
