I'm running OFFICE/WORD on this tweaked version via Win 11. They'll nag you to upgrade to the latest version of course, it will be free BUT remember that it will include the online stuff if you do and never, never underestimate the naggery of One Drive.

I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
Office 365 is approx £80 GBP per year.

Can install on multiple devices, and latest security updates.

No brainer.

Yup. I eventually capitulated to that so that I could get it on the rest of the family's PCs. All the gals here like to write. Mother had her own licensed version from work, so she uses the commercial version.

I think the people that are unhappy with windows 11 should take a crack at customizing the things they dont want when they install windows.

I haven't had onedrive or other unwanted apps as part of windows out of the box.

Always worked great.

Creating your own custom images saves so much time. Windows 11 23h2 is much more easy than 24h2, so do keep that in mind.

Many people don't want to spend the time tweaking an OS that consistently gives them trouble. No, they want to actually use their PC and ignore the rest.

People like myself have a little extra time on their hands for such menial exploits but I can't help asking myself why I should have to bother.

Can't there be a bare bones version of Windows that simply allows me to build as I go and install modular apps that allow me to customize?

This strikes me as a much more sensible approach.

Surgery is always risky business and not all third party programs are safe to use. I'm pretty sure that's what got me into trouble when I tried to roll back to Windows 10 from a Windows "approved by Windows" but failed version of Windows 11 on my other PC. I'm guess it was because I tweaked my Windows 10 too much. Fortunately I had back ups but who wants to waste time rescuing their operating system?

none of what your doing there is using third party programs, its all microsoft tools.

In general, the people complaining about windows doing things tend to be a bit more tech savvy, so its better to use your frustration into turning it better right? Unless you just like to complain.........venting can help sometimes.

Ideally yes, it would be nice if you could choose a limited setup without apps and ads etc but that won't ever happen.

It doesn't take long to do. Kari tutorial is a bit more lengthy, but the unattended answer file is a quick web page fill out, download the file and throw on the install media and your good to go.

My guess is, if MS would create a "bare bones" OS they could probably sell millions of copies of this, but you have to have some common sense to think of things like this, I'm sure that is lacking there. :D

:::sigh::: I once had a similar dream. Bought an acreage. Paid cash. The bank didn't like that. The real estate company didn't like that. Then health issues started happening so I wound up staying in town. Sold the acreage to first born daughter for a buck. Life's funny that way. Alberta definitely has its own breed of internet cowboys.

True, my tweaking journey started to get rid of a green loading bar in explorer and here I am.
It is not that hard, I am not a programmer, not an expert, I just copy/paste and I manage.
I cut Windows 11 processes to half from 150 to 70. but it runs like a kitten. It is worth it.

Yes, most people hate 11, but it is here to stay, you can not use XP/7 forever. Tame it or lose it. :smirk:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Whether I like it or not, I have to adapt. Linux is not an option. It is free, but the learning curve is way too steep. Windows 11 is more or less the same product, just in different packaging.

hi when I brought my Samsung laptop/tablet it came with windows 11 mind you for nearly £2000 I would in expect it too, it is very fast probably because I have good WIFI as well>

From opening it to getting on line takes 15 seconds and that is typing my password in as well! mind you even the other one I have that is only just 3 years old is still fast.
So yes very happy with windows 11
