ASUS Z690 Maximus Hero motherboards reversed memory capacitor recall

  • Staff
To our valued ASUS Customers,

ASUS is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. We have recently received incident reports regarding the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard. In our ongoing investigation, we have preliminarily identified a potential reversed memory capacitor issue in the production process from one of the production lines that may cause debug error code 53, no post, or motherboard components damage. The issue potentially affects units manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial number starting with MA, MB, or MC.

You can identify your part number by referring to the product packaging: Please reference the attached image

As of December 28, 2021, there have been a few incidents reported in North America. Going forward, we are continuing our thorough inspection with our suppliers and customers to identify all possible affected ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboards in the market and will be working with relevant government agencies on a replacement program.

Thank you so much to everyone for your patience and support while we are working through the replacement program.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact ASUS customer service.

The problem is in that rectangular part next to the box at the end of the RAM slots. You can't see it due to damage, but there's a stripe on it.If the stripe is on the right then you are all right. If the stripe is on the left then how much time you have left is anyone's guess and you should stop using it immediately.

At least Asus didn't act like Gigabyte and play dumb. That's what I like about Asus. They will ask you to give them proof and if they can repro, they will fix it.

Hi Obelix,

I'm sorry that you had issues with your Asus board.

I've been building machines for many years. All boards have issues when they are launched to market. That's why I never buy a board (except this one time last year BIG mistake) that has least 6 months of updates (often I wait a year).

Asrok make good boards but they have issues as all of them do.

For example: If you buy a board with a USB audio chip and it has driver or sound issues, all the boards with the same make will have issues.

Now as for this problem, it is unique to Asus. Asus did not wait to react, Once they were sure it was their problem, they owed up to it.
That's why I like Asus.

Everything is clear to me, but for many years I had an Asus from about 1997 until these years, different brands, there were no problems until the release of ssd m2 disks, since then there have been problems. just a name that pays and you forget about quality ;;;; HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 to all members of the forum.

there were no problems until the release of ssd m2 disks, since then there have been problems.

I've had nothing but stellar performance from the two NVMe M.2 SSD drives on my ASUS motherboard.

I have A Strix Z590 Wifi-A the board runs with 3 Samsung Nvme M.2 (one running @Pcie4.0) No issues at all.
The only issue I had, not any more was USB audio. Created all sorts of issues. But, like I said that's what happens with new boards. Every board maker using that audio chip has had issues.

The real problem is Asus support and return practice. They still are good until something goes wrong. In this case the consequences forced them to do something.

I agree. I've seen this a few times on the forums. I noticed it depends were you are. Mind you, it should never be but in my case I've never had that issue. I just changed the one I have and asked for advanced return and it was granted.

I've noticed over the years that Asus usually isn't refusing to RMA but it takes them a quite a while before acknowledging an issue with their boards. I think I can understand from reading issues in the ROG forums. Often the problem is either user related or incompatible hardware. I've seen myself argue for a week that my board was faulty but it actually was incompatible hardware (which I would have never thought because I've been using the same hardware on Asus boards for many years). It probably was a driver issue (Which often is but not sure) and gets fixed within unfortunately a few weeks (not days) .

Now, what gets us all peeved is that we have to play the role of computer technician and have detailed proof of the problem. So our first line of thinking is "Why should I prove it? I know it's that" It doesn't really make sense. If we know it's that then we should be able to prove it.

For example my sound issue on this board. I had proof that the board was booting way slower when the driver was installed. NO issues using the board without the driver. So had to be the driver. I even did a boot trace showing that the loading issues was with sound chip.

They couldn't repro the issue, so they said look we will RMA the board because we aren't saying that you're wrong, we just can't repro the problem.

I got irritated because I said another board won't change a thing. Then I said OK, you want to change the board, I don't want a refurbished or repaired board. I want a new board and I want advanced exchange. They said it's tougher because of the pandemic, They only have repaired boards. Nonetheless they agreed but said I'd have to wait until they had one in stock. Finally, a week later they shipped a new board.

Meanwhile, I continued to search because I said to myself, If they are right then it's something else. So I started testing the board thoroughly (what I admit I should have done at first.) You start bare-bones and work your way up. I disconnected everything and tried booting. Well, go figure everything booted fine.

Well to make a long story short (well it is long ) after installing one item after the other I found the problem (not the solution). As soon as I plugged my Logitech C615 (new but old model) boot slow down started. Now, was it the USB port? No because moving around port to port did the same thing.

I didn't want to wait to see if it was driver related so I ordered another web cam (a Nexigo) I wanted to try them out at the same time. PROBLEM SOLVED.

So in the end, it wasn't the board that had an issue. It was either driver or hardware related. (haven't retested).

This all goes to show that we often jump the gun to blame the board maker. So I can sort of understand why Asus wants detailed proof before blaming the board (just as long as they are testing on their end).

Like I said, at least they didn't do like Gigabyte and say, "Power supply?" No problems. o_O

And again, I agree Asus should have the same support & RMA arrangements anywhere you live. :)(y)

First off, ANY vendor can experience a bad QC issue. It happens and no one is immune. It's how the situation is handled that makes the difference between keeping customers and losing them.

That said, Asus drove me away from them when I bought my first ever "Asus" anything product in the form of a notebook. I'd found the power adapter was getting a little too warm when used. Calling Asus support on this got me nothing but frustration cause in the end I never got a replacement power adapter (Asus simply lied they were going to replace it, only to tell me they couldn't after follow-up phone calls on shipment status), and instead had to purchase one elsewhere (same adapter). That adapter still works.

I also know no customer service is 100 percent perfect; I've had both good and bad with Gigabyte (my preferred board), but it was simply the BS and flat out lies that pushed me forever away from Asus. And I acknowledge they make some great motherboards. Still...

That customer service experience however has never left me. That was 8 years ago, and to this day I've never owned or used an Asus motherboard (or anything Asus after that).

That's me.

I have several Asrock boards and so far no trouble. The only Asus board I had went funny, but did take ten years to do so, so I cannot really fault their quality.

Never had any problem with Asus here, have had two Gigabyte boards fail, luck of the draw, I doubt in reality any company is much different to any other regarding failures or faults.

I don't know if MSI changed their game but man those boards were cheap and badly made. Mind you, it's been many years since.

My secondary system uses an MSI X570 Gaming Plus.

Seems solid enough, but its BIOS setting layout is awful (IMHO).

Hi,
Yep my luck I would gotten one of these hero was the cheapest rog and it has hdmi graphics so no gpu needed lol

Seems asus is adding a lot third party utilities downloads as drivers maybe this is the new focus instead of proper training for assembly and testing.
