AutoSave in all Microsoft Office 365 Personal Classic has been turned off

A few days ago the AutoSave setting in all my Office 365 Personal Classic apps showed as being turned off on the toggle top left hand side. The applicable setting under File - Options - Save is still saying that AutoSave is turned on.

When I try a turn it on with the toggle it then asks me to click to upload the file to OneDrive but then saves a second copy of the file in the top level folder. All my files are in the OneDrive Personal folders.

Manually saving any changes to a file works correctly and the changes get uploaded to OneDrive.

I do access the same OneDrive folder structure from another computer signed in with the same Microsoft Account and all is ok with that Office setup.

Would appreciate any help to resolve this annoying problem.

Thank you.

Thank you - Yes that is virtually the same problem. The reply in that MS thread from an advisor is very difficult to follow and not all the troubleshooting routes are options.

I have tried:
Doing a full repair of Office 365
Unlinking and re linking my OneDrive account
Making sure my file structure is within the OneDrive folder as it always has been
Making sure File - Options - Save - Has the applicable settings for AutoSave to be on
Making sure all Windows Update is up to date.

It may be a coincidence but this seems to have started when in order to reduce my yearly Office 365 subscriptions I reduced down to the 'Classic' version.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Autosave will not work on files stored locally. It is the way Office 365 is designed. Autosave ONLY works on files stored in Onedrive. There is no way to turn autosave on for local files.

The files are not stored locally. They are in OneDrive.

Open a document, select FILE, select OPTIONS, select SAVE in left pane, Is "autosave files stored in the cloud by default" box checked? If so,
is "save autorecover information" also checked? You need to check both of them in both Word and Excel settings.

If that doesn't allow autorecover to work, make sure you are signed into Onedrive.

Both these options are selected in the Office applications and I am signed into OneDrive.

Everything had been working perfectly until a few days ago and had been for a long time. I had not changed anything myself. As I said before the only difference is that my Office 365 suite was downgraded to the Classic version to save on subscription cost to save on money. It's a mystery.

This problem has now resolved itself without any intervention from me. All very strange.

Thanks to all for help.
