Avira antivirus - I can't uninstall, or repair it!

I wanted to remove Avira Anti-virus, but the uninstallation didn't fully complete, and though the programme folders are gone, I was left with some entries in the registry. They won't allow me to remove them manually.

The result is that Windows Defender, when I run it, appears as just a blue background with the log/shield on it. I tried reinstalling Avira but the setup tells me I already have the programme, and the 'Repair' option fails at 50%. Revo uninstaller doesn't see any Avira software.. so I am now stuck. There are, apparently, Microsoft removal tools, but none of the links I have found actually leads me to what I might need.

Would appreciate some help in getting rid of the last remnants of Avira (only in the registry, I think: the three folders in C drive aren't there, at least), so that I can run Defender.

Many thanks!

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
An alternative or "complement" could be reinstalling Windows Defender (maybe there's a tutorial), or running DISM Restorehealth and SFC scannow.

They have, or had a specific tool for cleaning Avira Registry Entries, it's an older tool, but worth trying

If what you've tried up to now has failed then use "Everything" as Admin and search for Avira. Remove all that you can and reboot.
If needed - try reinstalling it then use the removal tool.

The one thing notably missing now seems to be an official current Avira removal tool. There was one years ago (post #4), but apparently not now. Hmm.

So as A Guy said, that's probably the first and easiest thing to try. Note: recommended to be run from Safe Mode:

If you than need to search the registry, this free registry editor has a better search feature than regedit:

Thanks for the replies... I will look at them closely later today when I am free and report back.

I cannot however, as I mentioned, reinstall Avira, as the setup tells me I already have it on the PC and the only option is a repair, which fails at about 50%. There are no restore points that would be useful unfortunately..

I also found the suggestion on Reddit, mentioned above, but I have no Avira folders on the drives now - presumably just registry entries that block Defender (is that why I get a blank page, with just the logo/shield when I run it?). I agree entirely with the very last comment on that Reddit post!

OK, I found the Avira Registry cleaner tool on another site, but even in Safe Mode it did nothing. The 'Everything' software however found lots of stuff - mostly empty folders, it's true - and removed them all. Great little tool - I shall keep it archived for another time. Thanks for the heads up.

I manually deleted more registry keys with 'Avira' in the name (carefully! - some are not related to Avira, or have 'avira' in the middle of their name quite by chance (Javavira.... for example). But there are still two keys 'Avira.Security' that won't be deleted, and Windows Defender is still a blank page with a shield logo on it, so presumably not functioning. Nothing happens when I ask it to scan a folder, using the context menu.. I'll see if I can reinstall it, if that's possible. Otherwise, rather than reinstall Avira, which has been a real pain to me, I guess will find a different anti-virus.

The PC is just used for flight simulation - no emails and I don't browse the internet on it, so it's low risk, but I do need some kind of virus protection on it of course: I would want the least invasive software (freeware) available - if anyone has recommendations?

Thank you to everyone who has replied to my plea for assistance! ;-)

Windows Defender should be fine, with Malwarebytes free as a 2nd opinion.

Bitdefender free is also good.

Windows Defender should be fine
.. if I ever get it working again . I have tried a repair, then a reset and reinstalled via 'Terminal' (Powershell); then run sfc... but although the Defender Firewall seems OK, Windows Security (Defender) still just brings up that blank page + logo... nothing happens and there are no options anywhere. I can't think what else I could do to get it back 😢

Bitdefender free is also good.

If worse comes to worse, you may have to back up all your personal files and reimage your machine. There are various guides around here on how to do that.

Then start over using Defender or Bitdefender as an anti-virus program.

Then when such times as a program needs to be uninstalled in the future, use something like Revo and remove all trace of the program from your machine. That includes the associated program folders & registry keys associated with the program being uninstalled. That's also a good way to avoid all this from happening again.

Make a backup first in the event of a failure.
Go to settings - system - recovery - Fix problems using Windows Update and select Reinstall now. Your apps, files and settings will be kept. It will take a while so be patient.

Avira programs from Task Manager have you checked there to see if there are any entries referring to Avira? If you see any right click on any (if there) and open location file. Hopefully one of these will be the setup file which will allow you either re-install Or uninstall this app. Revo is a good uninstaller but this one is better and free called Geek uninstaller Geek Uninstaller Free

Yes, I should have used Revo - I do have it. Too late now of course. I am not going to reimage the PC or take drastic measures. I have just spent two days moving my flight simulator setup from Windows 10 to Windows 11! I shall probably just install BitDefender and leave it at that. There are no traces of Avira on the drives (thanks to the 'Everything' app), nothing in Task Manager, nothing in Revo: I assume those two stubborn entries in the registry are what is stopping Defender from working, I can't see what else it would be.

Thank you, but I'm afraid that is all a bit 'above my pay grade'.

I managed to delete remaining Avira registry entries by using msconfig/selective startup, but no change to Defender as a result.

Some advance: having found and deleted many Avira registry entries in safe mode (as above), I was able to reinstall te Avira Security - and then delete it with Revo. Unfortunately, Windows Defender still doesn't work: the window opens witrh just the shield logo and closes after about half a minute.

Incidentally, when I ran the 'Everything' program after Revo had finished, there were almost 100 instances of Avira folders/subfolders still on the hard drive. All gone now. Thank you 'Everything'!

Probably install BitDefender tomorrow and move on!

and then delete it with Revo
Did you use the Advanced option for Revo when the uninstall was complete, without re-booting? Crucial.
