If you need a VPN use a proper commercial one -- they are cheap and secure enough. Get one as well that has the "Tunnelling" feature so you can exclude specific apps from under VPN control when using the VPN -- often it's desirable to exclude your local LAN with shared drives from VPN control.

Nordvpn is fast, reliable, has loads of servers. There's a few others too -- no real need to use a free VPN -- they come at too high a (hidden) price.

It's always surprising to see people believe they're safeguarding their privacy by outsourcing their internet connection to a random company (usually overseas in a poorly regulated country) simply because its website claims to offer protection and asserts it keeps no logs.

I do occasionally use Nordvpn but mainly for geolock bypassing. I do trust them but hey who really knows....

That's about the only reason to use a VPN these days -- it's about time Internet was truely international -- remember the regional nonsense with DVD's !!! and the bonkers DRM with music from a few years back.

I use Proton VPN, they claim no logs. They do offer the tunneling feature and they have an app for Mac, Windows, Linux, IOS, and Android, as far as the Windows and Android apps, work very well. They are open source, and they are from Switzerland.

Nordvpn is one of the most reliable out there -- loads of fast servers and I like the "Tunnelling" feature which means you can exclude applications of choice from VPN control when you are using the VPN -- for example access to local shared / NAS drives. Cheap or Free ones always have a "hidden cost".

I second Proton VPN. It is a good service and runs smoothly.

Free VPN comes at a cost. They have to make money somehow and they do that by selling your data.

There's ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN, all are subscription-based. I've heard good things about all three. VPNs are a personal choice. If you don't have a need for them then don't buy.

If you need to use one, make sure you don't use any of the "free" ones, that come, usually as a browser plug-in. "Free" really ain't free. There's a price to pay if you use one of those fly-by-night ones.

I use Surfshark. Love it. Works perfect. I have use quite a few other mainstream ones Like ExpressVPN etc but prefer Surfshark. I love their Alternative ID feature and Masking my Email feature.

I rarely use VPNs now, but when I used to, the free Cloudflare WARP worked fast. The question is whether the data is provided by court request or can be obtained by anyone.
And you can make your own VPN.

While you can make your own VPN most people use these to get round the Geo-blocking of content they wish to access -- e.g Premier League football in the UK on Sat afternoons between 15.00 and 17.30 or accessing Netflix etc content provided in some countries or not in others. So unless you can hide the location of your ISP server then there's no point in creating your own VPN. Another use is being able to remotely connect to say a home computer when the http / https ports are blocked. Things like Putty can easily be used for that purpose using port tunnelling though -- so I really don't see the need for a private home made VPN at all. The only conceivable use as far as I can see is that you want to exchange say dubious material with others without raising any alarms or generating messages which would make you "a Person of Interest".
