Hi,

Created full backups using hot (online) and cold using rescue USB, at the same time and on an ext. HDD.

1. Online imaging is 1 GB lesser vs. using rescue USB.
2. Read write speed 3.5 Gb/s 900 MB/s vs. 2.8 Gb/s and 800 Mb/s?

Any ideas why?

Got a big Dell Bios update a few hrs. later, should I recreate full backup?

The DELL software that's telling you to update the BIOS, works from within Windows.
So, you may want to make a new backup so if you have to restore... DELL won't try to update the BIOS again.
But the BIOS itself, isn't included in the backup.

Generally what I do is make the backups from within Windows.
Then when needed, restore them from the bootable Rescue Media (USB)

Thanks for explaining. Fine I'll create another full backup from within W11. Is creating from within as good as from using rescue media?
And rescue media be only used, if required to restore a earlier backup?

Neither is "better". It's just easier :)

I have always made the backup from within Windows and restored from the bootable media.
No matter which backup software I used.

I guess the reason I've always restored from the bootable media, is that the computer has to reboot to restore Windows anyway. Also, each restore I do from the bootable media.... lets me know the bootable media still works.

Sooner or later, something will happen and Windows won't boot.
For that reason, I want to KNOW that my bootable media works.

Speed...ignore. Macrium is really bad about reporting the actual speed.
Like I said... I always make the backup from within Windows. I've seen speeds anywhere from 8 to 22Gb/s.
And the interesting part, is that my backups always take the same... time. So Macrium's speed reporting is whacked.

For the difference in size, it could be anything.
Something leftover in the LCU folder, something in the recycle bin... ??

I created both simultaneously, within windows and mins later after..... system wasn't used for the later.
Ran CCleaner and rebooted once..
I/O speed by Macrium is inaccurate... thanks again!
Have the recycle bin empty, set to nothing goes in it, direct out.

BTW, what's LCU 📁 apologize for my ignorance!

C:\Windows\servicing\LCU ...is where MS puts the update uninstallers.
Each folder in the LCU folder is about 1.2GB, and you really only need the last (newest) one.


After each WU, I always open an elevated command prompt and run...
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

That removes all folders in the LCU folder, BUT the newest one.
For example, this is what's left on my Win 10 computer, after running that command, after the update on Microsoft Tuesday...

That one is 1.16GB.
If I wanted to uninstall the last WU, I would need that folder.
But I don't really need all the other ones in there.


I do the same thing on Windows 11, for the same reasons.

I have 3, 1st 2 size on disk approx. 270 MB and the 3rd approx. 330 MB.

Should I delete the 1st 2 or all 3 or neither?LCU.png

That's weird. An out-of-band update, or "just" a .NET update could be small like that, but the folders from the monthly updates are always about 1.2GB

Others have commented on the same size... multiple times.

Maybe they're smaller on Windows 11. I don't think I've ever checked the size on Win 11.
Next time I'm on Win 11... I'll check.

Although I'm not on a release version of Windows 11, the cumulative updates lately have been in the 300MB range

I found why the discrepancy in size...

If I attached the ext. USB HDD before reboot, going into rescue media no difference in sizes, in W11 and using it, both created a full backup size equal i.e 22.6 GB.

If attached while in rescue media it's 22.6 vs 23.8 GB.

Don't know the tech logic behind....

Both transfer rate and I/O is faster in W11 vs creating full backup using rescue media...not really that significant.

Takes around 9 mins to create a full backup with verification in W11 and approx 10 mins using rescue media.
