I built my own NAS with a Fractal Design Node 804 cube case and an old AMD FX system I decommissioned as a PC. It runs TrueNAS with 2 pairs of 3 TB hdd's mirrored so I basically have the ZFS version of Raid 1 with 6 TB total storage. I've got about 1.5 TB of irreplaceable pictures on it. For years I've relied only upon the mirrored hdd pairs for security, and I have had to replace 2 failed hdds with no issues (one at time).
With wildfires happening the way they do now, I decided that I probably didn't have enough backup, so I now have 2 4TB USB hard drives. One is always connected to the NAS and the other is connected to a Raspberry Pi set up with ZFS. I use rsync set to run daily to back up my important data to the USB hard drive plugged into the NAS and a monthly rsync set up to back up my data to the hdd connected to the Pi. My Pi resides in my trailer (parked in my driveway) and goes with me when I go camping so I have a media server with 800+ movies saved on the NAS and USB hdds. It connects to my home WiFi when at home. If I ever have to quickly evacuate, I just have to grab either or both USB hdds, and preferably the Raspberry Pi. If any of the rsync tasks fail, I get an email notification.
All the important data from my computers is saved on the NAS, but I don't do system images because I don't really have that many programs installed so I just rely on the ability to do a clean install if a computer crashes.
What do you think? Am I pretty well covered for backing up my important data?
