Best 1tb NVME upgrade

Also seen a few places where people say it's the one recommended for laptops.

I've seen that as well.
Looks like you found the right one. :-)

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Well I've gone for the SK Hynix despite the fact I could only find it on Amazon, it ships from the US and there was only one in stock. So I will keep my fingers crossed that I don't have any warranty issues - as I'm in the Uk. It cost £141 compared to £114 for the Samsung 980 pro. I hope I have made the right decision. Both 1tb. Would like 2tb but can't warrant it/afford it right now.

Also seen a few places where people say it's the one recommended for laptops.
I go for the best deal at the time for my needs.

Royal Mail informs me to expect a package from the Czech republic so looks like it's not being shipped from the US after all.

To be fair, the issues with the 980 Pro NVMe drives that are experiencing the read-only issue have it on older firmware. I bought my drives almost a year ago, now, and updated immediately to the latest firmware - 5B2QGXA7 - which has been out since 25 Jan 2022 - over a year now.

The 990 line and their issues I only know about from reading, as I din't have 990s - but that triplet of 980 Pros has served me very, very well thus far.

Yeah, my laptop has the exact same thickness (17.9mm) as the OP's. I have not put a heatsink on my 2TB 980 Pro. The fact that my laptop's M.2 slot is limited to PCIe 3.0 is what causes it to not run hot under normal load. Under heavy load it still doesn't reach very far above 60 degrees celsius.

The fact that my laptop's M.2 slot is limited to PCIe 3.0 is what causes it to not run hot under normal load. Under heavy load it still doesn't reach very far above 60 degrees celsius.

That is a great point - PCIe 3.x access for those drives will be fast, just not (quite) as fast as PCIe 4.x - but that also translates into lower temps overall, unless you're crunching away at data, gaming, etc. - basically any drive intensive activities.

My motherboard has integrated heatsinks for the 3x NVMe M.2 slots, so my temps are 39, 42-43 and 49 for the 3 drives, with the 49 drive being directly under the GPU. The last couple of times I cleanly installed Windows 11 I paid attention to which drive was the hottest and relegated that for storage only, so it would be used the least, and the coolest drive is my system drive, so knowing the temps based upon location, especially if one runs significantly cooler than the other(s) helps in planning how to install your OS as well.

Being a desktop, with gobs of air cooling in dual push/pull configuration, I don't think I've seen any of my drive break 58 to date. With laptops, while a heatsink may help, the best thing you can do is to keep hte air cooling vents free and clear of debris and dust - on a regular basis, no less. If you can find heatsinks that actually fit in your chassis, it won't hurt to have them - but I don't see that they will be required, more like recommended.

In the latest version of HWiNFO64 there's now three temp sensors shown under S.M.A.R.T. for the 980 Pro. Older versions of the program were showing only two. By default the one for the Elpis controller chip is named Temperature 2. Under load this chip is what runs a lot hotter than the NAND memory chips, but this can't hurt, as the Elpis is designed to run that much hotter compared to 3D NAND. As you can see in my screenshots that I posted in that other thread I linked to previously, in my laptop the NAND stays at a reasonable 50 (temp sensor named Temperature). This screenshot was made right at the end of the CrystalDiskMark SEQ1M Q1T1 write stage, which is when the SSD runs at its hottest during this particular benchmark test. I know I can force the Elpis to attain a few degrees hotter than 62. But that would be doing a stress test taking it all the way up to the maximum extreme that it can achieve inside this laptop, not a real world heavy load type of scenario. My benchmark result (that I also posted in that same other thread) shows that it is capable to write large files at slightly above 3400 MB/s, the maximum that PCIe 3.0 allows. So, even though my laptop limits it at that speed, it still writes faster than the vast majority of PCIe 3.0 SSDs, as those typically are stuck at a lower maximum in this regard. Here is one example of that:

E12-512G-PHISON-SSD-B27-BB1 (PCIe 3.0 x4).png

That said, I have a series of batchfiles that I like to use to keep my laptop's cooling fan silent whenever I want (at the sacrifice of extra speed). One is to disable Intel Turbo Boost, one is to re-enable it. This makes one hell of a difference to my ears, and does so even though I am only just surfing the web while doing nothing else. Methinks running Firefox on an Intel Tiger Lake CPU tends to be some ways similar to mixing fire with a tiger. 🎪🐅💻🔥😂
