Best browser?

These companies have been finding it difficult for years,
It is only difficult if you use DirectX (which is not part of Linux).
I can tell you that programming a game for XBox or Playstation is 100x harder than for Linux.

...but anyways.,..we are way out of topic now, since this talk has nothing to do with Browsers

I was looking around at emails and found '10 best list'. So I checked it out and found in that last aol.com - no there is a blast from the past. I think I was on Aol at the beginning of life as we know it. I installed it and had a good root through. I like this. I had two email addresses, I have removed one and now use aol.com email as my secondary and email for info from various web sites etc.

Groan - there must be a zillion posts asking which is best browser.

There is only one answer - the best browser is the one that suits you.

OP has asked for an opinion (albeit refers to OS) but here is the thing - all responses are random.

OP would be far better reading various websites that describe differences in detail to make an informed choice. Of course, again, rather than asking a rather unanswerable question, OP could just install each and make up their own mind.
Exactly. I used to be a solid fan of Chrome since its intertwined with google so much, but then i went to firefox, then edge last year,
well guess what after RE-Trying all of them about 2 months ago I have been a solid Firefox user now and use chrome as a backup.
For me Edge was awesome for a bit but then after a year of updates suddenly it was just bogged down, SLOOWWWW as molasses and started blocking everything i did practically. but just as you said, there are a zillion posts about this and the best one is the one that suit you.
My opinion is download and install the top 10 browsers and use each of them for a few days and see which one you love the most.
I loved Vivaldi too because there are crap tons of settings for how YOU want the UI to look visually etc. but it lacked in so many other ways,
the best feature for me of Vivaldi is you can move the tabs and search bar etc to the bottom of the screen, but yeah try em all and figure it out for yourselves people.

It seems when I find one that works well for most everything, it goes weird after a couple of years. I did chromium portable for a time. Firefox at times run from a ramdisk, Opera, Edge(once it became chrome-derived).. and many others. So I wrote a launcher with 8 buttons that saved urls and searches. When a browser starts acting weird I just assign that button to one that is working well at the time.

Like Maxthon II to III they all seem to go through the "your extension has to be signed by us" phase. So many control freaks out there! It can get depressing. But anyway I stream video quite a bit now and some browsers can't handle some sources.. so that is a limiting factor for me.

What ever happen to Netscape Navigator ?

This article may be fun to read. I remember the "progressive" image loading they mention. Images would fill in skipping scan lines. That way on slow dial-up connections you could tell what it would look like sooner, rather than waiting for the whole thing to draw. Netscape 4.0 came with a web page editor, browser, email and a news client. These features still exist as SeaMonkey.

I was given the job of optimising images so they would download to browsers faster and so display more quickly. That's not so much of a factor now but it was in the dial-up days. Convert to gifs where practicable and even knock a number of colours out of those until it started to notice. It all meant a lower byte size and quicker image download/display. I still optimise images for Internet display to this day out of habit (physical size and file size) but not so necessary now.

I have Firefox installed but mostly use Edge. It occasionally wants to reset to using the Bing search engine and Home Page under the guise of, 'Let's finish setting everything up for you' but once that is known about and ignored, it does everything I expect of a browser. It seems about as fast as Firefox and other browsers.

When will posters learn the difference between an open question and a closed question

Open - which is best car - impossible to answer - it is all opinion
Only valid answer is "the one that suits your needs"

Closed - which cars come with with Feature XXX as standard
Answerable but may be long winded of course.

I never see the point of open questions. You get a wide range of answers, and you are none the wiser.
Besides, there are many websites that compare browsers - read them and make your own mind up.

The other thing is that most users only use a subset of browser features, and they are pretty much common to all browsers, so it probably makes no difference to most users.

China is the biggest software thief going, if they need to put it into words then they are doing it.

There is only one answer - the best browser is the one that suits you.

The above statement is very true and the best advice.

(correction: there are 3 choices -- Blink, WebKit, and Gecko)

At the end of the day, one might come to realize that there are really only 2 ... 3 mainstream choices to make.

WebKit, Blink, and Gecko are your choices.

These are the primary rendering engines that drive the mainstream browsers of today.

If you were to pick Chrome, Edge, Opera, or Vivaldi, you would be choosing the Blink rendering engine. Sure, the browsers all look different, but under the hood they are the same browser.

*corrected*

If you pick Firefox (you'll get the Gecko rendering engine).

If you pick Safari (you'll get the WebKit rendering engine).

(footnote: all google chrome variants except ios now use blink)

If you pick Firefox, you would be choosing the WebKit rendering engine...
I thought Firefox was incorporating that Gecko/Servo conglomeration? 🤷‍♂️

Netscape is still here.
NCSA Mosaic developers Marc Andreessen and Jamie Zawinski created the first version of Netscape and it became available in October 1994 and was developed under the codename “Mozilla”.
Today we call it Firefox.

Internet Explorer also started out under the base code for NCSA Mosaic, but had to pay royalties for use to Spyglass Mosaic.

Opera (1996) and Chromium (2008) also used base code from NCSA Mosaic at the beginning.

You are absolutely correct (Gecko/20100101)

I've been on a Mac too long I think.
It was Google that had to use WebKit on Mac as I recall, and I got my wires crossed on the post above.
