Once I was convinced it was well and truly dead i installed a spare drive of the same type. WD however Days later I am plugging along still loading programs, re-purchasing when I have to and restoring those that will reinstall and reregister. Days yet to go.

As a matter of urgency, you may wish to start taking an image of your system - so it will only take a few minutes to restore it.

re-purchasing when I have to
Why would you need to repurchase any software? There should always be a method available to reinstall in the event of a system failure. In the very worst case scenario, you might have to contact the manufacturer to get them to reset the license for you, but there should never ever be a need to repurchase software for a system component failure.

That said, I'll second what @IanMosley stated: Consider instituting a backup plan. You can perform a complete restoration in mere minutes.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Why would you need to repurchase any software?
Just a guess but maybe they lost the activation keys and/or the proof they bought the software. I have at least one program that if I ever have to reinstall I won't be able to activate it. The programmer/owner past away and the online activation server is turned off.

Okay, I can't ague with that one. Ironically, I too have one such piece of software. I had to find another program to replace that one. I had completely forgotten about that scenario.

My program is called VideoRedo. I use it a lot to edit my videos. I have tried other programs but none of them come close. I was hoping the owners wife would sell the program but as far as I know she hasn't.
