Bizarre Windows 11 Sleep behaviour!

So I've been having this problem ever since I got this new i7-11700 system with Gigabyte z590 UD motherboard. I like to think I'm pretty good at troubleshooting these things myself but this has me totally stumped. Any insights would be very gratefully received.

When I first got this system (on Windows 10 at the time):

• it would not recover from sleep properly. If the keyboard was touched the system would restart but the keyboard and screen would not wake. The only option was to turn the system off and restart it. Then it would wake, actually using its hybrid sleep file. After such a wake it would work perfectly and be completely unaware there was ever a problem I guess because the hybrid sleep file was created on entering sleep and before the failure to wake.
• Hibernate on the other hand worked flawlessly and I used that for some months.

On upgrading to Windows 11, I tried sleep again and it worked perfectly and has done for several months - sleeping several times a day with no issues AT ALL. I assumed Microsoft had done some magic! However, today I needed to move the system, so had to completely disconnect from the power. I think this was the first time the motherboard has been completely disconnected from power since Windows 11 was installed. Now I am back in the old situation where hibernate works perfectly but resuming from sleep has the same symptoms as on Windows 10.

This makes no sense at all to me. Literally, I promise, nothing happened to this system other than totally disconnecting from the power, reconnecting and reconnecting the screen, keyboard and mouse.

I seriously have no idea what to try. Flailing around, I have tried using terminal to turn off hibernate and re-enabling to recreate the hiberfile.sys file but that did not help. Now I am back with:

• hibernate working perfectly
• Sleep always failing - keyboard and mouse do not wake up
• turning off after a failed wake from sleep and turning on again works perfectly, using the Hybrid Sleep file to leave all windows and apps open and running and the event log showing nothing at all - like it never happened!!

Please can some Windows sleep/standby guru tell me how these symptoms are even possible and hopefully give me some idea how to fix! I'm guessing some kind of total reset of the standby system (maybe involving some renegotiation with the BIOS) is what happened on upgrading to Windows 11, so maybe doing that again would fix it, but short of reinstalling Windows 11 I have no idea how to accomplish that!

What sleep states are allowed in your bios? Have you checked to see if maybe there is a bios update that might address such power issues?

Use this command "powercfg -a" to see power state available.

First, I would like to know if sleep (without hybrid sleep enabled) will work properly. Try at least temporarily disabling hybrid sleep and see if sleep will then work properly. If sleep works properly, it may be as simple as your system not getting along well with hybrid sleep. This is not at all unusual. There are a lot of systems that simply don't get along with this mode.

You might also want to try disabling "Fast Startup" to see if that may be interfering.

I have tried with hibernate and hybrid sleep disabled. No better sadly. I have tried with fast startup disabled, that also did not help. Not sure I have tried with all 3 disabled. I will try that tomorrow. See below power states.

I too kind of feel it is some kind of BIOS problem. I have already updated it once but it did not fix it. There is another one now that I will try to get hold of. The fact that the system fails to wake properly until the the power has been completely turned off and on (and then using the hybrid sleep file) does suggest a BIOS problem to me. But the baffling thing is that I absolutely promise you, since updating to Windows 11 sleep has worked perfectly, maybe 6 times a day, for 2-3 months and, again I promise, it has broken after doing nothing more than unplug the system from power, disconnect the display, keyboard and mouse and reconnect elsewhere. It's like the BIOS had some crucial settings in volatile memory that it has now forgotten and they need to be rewritten. But, I have no idea how to make that happen.

Windows clearly can use sleep on this system flawlessly, but it seems Windows and the BIOS are not now working well together. If only I could think of what would reset things in the same way that a fresh install of Windows 11 appeared to do.

Despite my feeble 'Search' attempts I missed this; I am very interested in this issue. I use an external monitor and keyboard with my new 3 week old W11 Dell, so my lid was always closed. It would sleep after 30 minutes, and for another 30 minutes I was able to either hit a key or move the mouse and it would wake. However, after 60 minutes the fan would roar, the closed laptop keyboard, laptop screen, and top of my desk would cook. No amount of keystrokes (int and ext) or mouse movement, not even lifting the lid, would wake the pc. The only thing that would 'fix' it was lifting the lid and pressing the power button for 20 seconds. This would shut everything down. After a restart it took about 20-30 seconds for the fan to cool everything down, and it was fine.

I am not as literate as the rest of you, my last laptop started as 2010 W7 and ended life 6 weeks ago as a W10 latest update. It only did sleep, hibernate, or stay awake - dunno about these S0, S1, etc.

Dell's answer to cooking my new laptop, after several hours of support, was to turn off 'sleep' mode except for the display.

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Hibernate
Hibernation has not been enabled.

Hybrid Sleep
Standby (S3) is not available.

So, am I good as is, or am I shortening the laptop lifespan? With a SSD is there an on/off?

It looks to me like sleep is not enabled in your bios but I'll leave it up to the hardware gurus on this board to give you an informed answer about that. But I will give you my opinion about the heat issue. We all know with electronics heat is a killer. And in any laptop there is no air flow because all the components are crammed together and there's no way for heat to dissipate....Plus you have the lid closed as well. The fan is just not big enough to handle a lot, even if it's running full speed. On its own an 11th generation i7 makes a ton of heat and way, way more when it hyperthreads. And if you are using it intensive stuff like gaming or photo editing, hyperthreading is probably kicking in a lot so the temps go even higher and stay that way for long periods (This makes me cringe). Put it on a quality cooling pad to lower your temps every degree you can. Or at the very least, raise up the back to get some air under it (but I don't think that will be enough in your case) Just my opinion. We'll see if anyone agrees with me. Best of luck with solving your sleep problem. There's a lot of knowledgable folks here.

Thanks glasskuter. I should clarify that since 'sleep' was turned off by Dell, pc runs fine, no more overheating. My question then is that no-sleep setup ok?
I do understand cooling needs - before there was hyperthreading I was occasionally needing extra fans etc for some modeling and stats calculations (never was much of a gamer.) I've seen a couple of 286 chips bubbled and warped.
At one time 'sleep' was kinda the time the computer rested. Imagine my concern when my 'sleep' settings tried to fry my laptop!
