Recent update (beta channel) - forces ALL apps onto Start menu and condenses (expandable with dropdown) my curated list of apps.

They were curated for a reason!

I hated when they condensed the right-click menu, moving many of the most used items (copy/paste) to the extended section.
Thanks to @Brink (IIRC) a reg fix was available.

MS devs have no free will. This is why Product Managers, and Group Product Managers, and Principal Group Product Managers exist.
PM's are entitled to ignore MS Feedback or common sense.

Fun fact - I did a consulting project at a very large software company about a decade ago.

Projects were assigned based on platform and customer application. You could predict with almost exact accuracy who would get which request/proposal for initial review. Maybe - maybe - one project a week would go to a PM/team that you wouldn't expect.

Yet every request languished on the AVP's desk until he had a chance to read the proposal and "make the assignment." This was never shorter than five days, and often longer. Meanwhile, customers are waiting.

Literally in one morning my team made a routing chart. Would shave at least a week off of every project. The de minimis projects that might get wrongly assigned would get noticed by the team, and THOSE would get kicked back to the AVP for review (which seems like a good use of his time).

Rejected. (For pseymour's benefit, I'll repeat: Rejected.)

The AVP "just liked" to read every proposal first.

And, yes, I sent them a very large invoice for that keen insight.

The Pinned is two rows - with an option to "Show All." The "All" - which used to be a click on the top - is now Icon List or Category based (their categories, not mine) - along fully half the bottom. To show all the Pinned, you have to click a drop down. So, two steps to see what you want to see, and zero steps to see the things you already made a conscious effort to hide.

Huzzah.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I don't use it often, have the things I need/use the most Pinned to the Taskbar and/or Start. And I've shortened the Search on the Taskbar to icon only.

I have my main ten software pinned to the taskbar, so I can launch with Win key. Then some of the others I use frequently but not regularly (mostly audio/video programs) I have grouped in my Start menu. Then everything I can't be arsed with... I don't know where it is. That's why there's Search.

But even if I only used it for Shutdown, the aesthetics of the new version is so chaotic.

I found something called Windhawk. It does exactly what I want - and more. Did I just open my system to the bots, though, is always the question.
