How does one bring back the ability to move the taskbar to the top and sides of the screen on windows 11

Hi, welcome to the forum

One doesn't as far as I know.

Apps like Stardock Start11 (trial but not free) allows you to place the taskbar at the top of the window but not the sides
It also allows you to float and detach from the bottom with rounded corners, but you can’t drag it anywhere.
Start menu can be any style from any version of windows, between 7/10/11 (Don’t know about 8)

Extensive folder menus available to create on the Taskbar etc etc… I like it.

Top.

Floating.

Previous versions of W10 & 11 left behind legacy code in DLL's for the desktop, which you could access. By the time you get to W11 and 22H2, MS permanently removed that code.

Here's how ExplorerPatcher's Wiki summarizes it:

Primary/secondary taskbar location on screen
This allows you to set the location of the taskbar on the screen.

When using the Windows 10 taskbar, the following locations are supported:

Bottom (default)

Left

Right

Top

When using the Windows 11 taskbar, the following locations are supported:

Bottom (default)

Top

Note: This setting is not available when using the Windows 11 taskbar on Windows 11 build 22621 or higher (22H2).

many thanks to all who replied to the problem i was facing , and a million thanks to "hdmi" for finding a fix , and the help of Grant ( the librarian ) who helped me to follow hdmi instruction. my taskbar is once again vertically on the left side , where it belongs . Now i just got to figure out how to give 10 points to hdmi for the extraordinary knowledge and help. i also liked the picture from Ghot with the microsoft witch , nicely put

AFAIK on a 4k screen with the Scale set to 150% (in Windows Settings | System | Display) it will still take up a lot of "screen estate" even after you change the icons size to Small. The fact that these icons are oversized also makes them unnecessarily too distracting, and, setting the taskbar to auto hide is not a solution to this. In addition, StartAllBack is not free, and not open source. All of this plus other useful features like the Window switcher and the Weather widget are why I much prefer to stick to ExplorerPatcher.
