Solved I actually WANT to move some windows off the screen!

yep, it does. just headless (no hardware involved)

btw, you can assign a hotkey to place the window where you want it and then activate whatever window you want off the screen and press the hotkey combo you assigned. will save time and steps, and hopefully be the best workaround for you until we get it fully situated.

right click SmartContextMenu tray icon > settings > Menu tab > Scroll down to "Custom" under "Alignment" and click the "..." button. Assign the key combo and save

I came across a program called WindowManager (DeskSoft - WindowManager - Window position and size manager) which allows application windows to be placed at any position and at any size (even off the edges using a minus co-ordinate!), and any/all windows to be returned to a specific position (absolute or relative) using a user-defined keyboard shortcut. Seems to do everything I want, so I'm going to have a play with it over the weekend, but ultimately I'd prefer the issue to not exist at all :rolleyes:

Even if I do manage to get the fundamental issue resolved, I can see WindowManager being so useful that I'll probably buy it. So far it's been excellent!

I do appreciate all of the help and suggestions by the way! :-):-);-)

Oh PS. Dell have been less than useless. I have a 3-year, onsite next business day warranty, and whilst I don't expect an engineer to come out, I think at least Dell Support could have responded after two days... :oops:

Just a quick update for anyone who's interested - the DisplayPort to VGA cable arrived earlier and it seems to have solved the issue! :D

I replaced the DP to HDMI cable with it, and after numerous powering off and on of the monitor, numerous cycles of putting the system to sleep, hibernate and wake-ups, every restart has resulted in all windows being in exactly the same place as they were before powering off - no moving or resizing of any windows :D

So it does seem to be an issue with DisplayPort and power, as there's also no device disconnect/reconnect sounds with the new cable.

Lesson learned for me - next time I buy a monitor (which won't be for a while as I've bought two in the last two months), it'll not have a DisplayPort connection on it - it's just too much unnecessary aggravation, all for nothing. I'd assumed that getting a new pc with DP would be a good thing. Wrong!

And I can't see any difference in quality or resolution using VGA, so all's good :-)

Hello dacrone, I'm having the same issue as 55sb. When you state "portable system tray app" do you mean RBTray Portable (https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/rbtray-portable)? After running RBTray Portable app, I've tried selecting ctrl + right click but I do not see "alignment". Is this the correct app, a different app? Please advise when you get a moment. Thanks so much!

Yes thanks neemobeer, I understand that. I'm using 2 monitors and just want to hide the title bar on windows at the top of the 2 monitors to optimize screen real estate (keeping them all visible)

I'm thinking you need more screen real estate. That's the reason I went to a 5120x1440 screen with a 1920x1080 as my secondary screen.

Ha, that's what I have (5120x1440). But in twin 32" monitors. With a 3rd 24" running 1080P, it seems tiny by comparison.
