His old gaming desktop is 7 years old and it's time for a new one. As much as we don't want to buy hardware in this day and age with absurd prices, we don't really have much choice. He's going with an all white build. so that makes things a bit harder as well, as we are very limited on the parts we can get.

Today, we ordered the OS NVME and a power supply. Went with a WD SN8100 2TB for the OS and a white Seasonic GX1000 fully modular power supply. His case, cooler and fans are all gonna be Lian Li. We will be going with another Ryzen, this time a 9800x3d. He's upgrading from a 3800x.

This time, I'm sure my son will be doing all of the building. I will just be helping in buying parts.

I'm curious: which GPU?

The 9800X3D has an iGPU, but I doubt that a gamer would stay with that.

He decided to go with the Gigabyte OC ICE Radeon RX 9070 XT 16 GB Video Card. He currently has an EVGA 2080 Super. He refuses to pay the cost on Nvidia cards this time around. He's gaming at 1440p, so the 9070XT should suit him fine. He looked at 5080's, but out of principal he wont spend 2x as much on his video card.

The Nvidia equivalent would be the 5070Ti. You gain DLSS, frame generation and superior ray tracing performance. Looks to be about a $200 premium over AMD.

Yeah, he looked at the 5070TI's, but didn't feel it was worth $250-$350 more to get more or less equivalent performance. He said he can easily live without raytracing performance and sure he will lose some FPS without DLSS, but again, he'd rather have $300 in his pocket towards another component or video card upgrade later. Price difference ends up around $300 here because he wants it to be white.

He splits his time fairly evenly between gaming and music production. So, the PC will be dual role for him.

The discussion caused me to check prices.

Yikes. I hope I don't need to replace a GPU anytime soon. Or RAM. Or an SSD.

I presume that prices will drop if the AI bubble bursts. But that could cause a recession, making funds for stuff like gaming PCs less available.

Yeah, he started with his part list on PC Part Picker. I wasn't enamored with his original NVME drive, so I suggested he go with that WD SN8100. It was more costly, but it was PCI Gen5 and 2x the size he originally picked. He has about 8TB of NVME he is bringing over from his old machine.

Yeah, the prices on RAM and SSD's is just absurd. But waiting it out, isn't going to be a shortgame. So, we gotta bite the bullet and just buy now. Because of the prices through, he will stick with 32GB of RAM instead of upgrading. He's been on 32 for years and it hasn't been an issue. I thought some of his music stuff might need more, but he says that it doesn't...and he would know best here.

Just remind him NOT to install those drives until he has his OS installed on the new system drive. Having them installed before Windows is installed can get him into a world of hurt.

I may be taking this too literally, but the 3800X is a DDR4 CPU. The 9800X3D, DDR5.

Yeah, too literal. We are buying another 32gb kit of DDR5 for the new box. Had these kits not been so expensive, we probably would have gone for 64GB as a upgrade from his old machine, but not spending a grand on RAM. He can do what he wants with a 32GB kit.

He's being very responsible and thoughtful in what his actual needs are. Hes trying to keep this in a reasonable budget rather than just running hog wild.
