Hello All,
I’m beginning to be asked by a number of self employed professionals, to set up their new windows 11 Laptop for their working from home business.
E.G a self employed freelance architect that works from home.
I understand the setup process for your ordinary home user/family.
However,
I am asking the community to help me understand what additional steps/tasks would be needed, to setup a brand new laptop specifically for a business, so it is secure and competently set up.
With thanks,
KingDing
First -- and MOST IMPORTANT you need a decent RELIABLE, ROBUST and moderately fast Internet provider -- you don't need to go for the ultimate mega speed things -- small home businesses need to keep costs reasonable -- allow for local taxes to be paid etc !!!
Now a decent laptop -- I'd suggest the HP type as thin , light, 32GB RAM, 512or 1GB internal NVME (SSD type) hard disk, decent fast wifi card etc. You should aim if using INTEL chipset laptops for minimum of i5 cpu or latest 12 gen or so cpu's.
Then for the OS -- My gut feel would be to install W11 Pro for Workstations rather than basic W11 pro as it's almost as good as enterprise, optimises things quite nicely on decent hardware and is robust these days . For business don't even THINK of using W11 Home edition !!!!
You must also have sufficient SAFE RELIABLE backup - both for your own business, plus tax / other legal stuff and customers data -- decent cloud services for businesses are available -- several GB from Microsoft for example at around €2.00 a month which IMHO is well worth it. Have also important documents / other data backed up locally too and lock away / store off site.
Preferably if you have more than one computer keep one dedicated for business only use. Most jurisdictions will allow capital cost to be offset against local taxation.
(Added) - For invoicing , AP, (Accounts payable) AR (Accounts receivable) / other financial stuff such as subscriptions to things like Ms Office/365 or similar it may also pay to get some sort of accounting package rather than manage this stuff yourself. It depends on the business of course - and also note costs of this type of service are "of-settable" against local taxation in most jurisdictions.
Good luck in these uncertain times with these business setups. !!!!
Cheers
