I have just noticed that appear to no longer be able to format the date as dd/mm/yyyy in Excel (Office 365)
A previous document that had a date cell as =TODAY() and which displayed the date as dd/mm/yyyy is now displaying as 20,11,2021 (current format setting)
However, there is no format type for dd/mm/yyyy when I attempt to reformat the cell back to dd/mm/yyyy
This is the same for any empty cell that I attempt to enter a date for and for new worksheets too
This may have changed with 22504.1000
What am I missing?

I just tried to figure this out myself...... It appears that you now need to change the "Locale" in the format cells dialog box.
I was able to change to English (United Kingdom) and it offered me a whole different set of formatting options to use to format the cell.

Well, that does make a little sense since dates are typically formatted month/day/year in the U.S. Glad you kind of solved the problem! Day-month-year (like 20-Nov-2021) without switching the locale.

Understood but I don't see any format types using a forward slash as a separator?

Which is why it should be mm/dd/yyyy
For being able to sort by date in text or filenames it is best to use ISO 8601 date format: YYYY-MM-DD
It has the further advantage that it can be extended to include time of day yyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss
It can also include the timezone so there can be no confusion about the date.

Even Microsoft use ISO 8601 dates, ever looked at a File History folder?

Just noticed it's the same for Outlook365 but Word365 appears unaffected for an inserted date (in that it appears as Sat, 20/11/2021)

Just realised that it was a recent change to the Region to show the day of the week in the Taskbar Clock that causes this issue
I followed the procedure here but it appears to cause unexpected behaviour for date format elsewhere

One other thought, in the format cells dialog there is an option for custom formats. Would this help??

Hi,
Since I work in both French and English, I need to adjust this all the time.

The regional format can also affect the excel settings. This is my actual in French.

Which is why it should be mm/dd/yyyy
Hi there
Any type of sorting on that Bonkers USA date system is going to throw up all sorts of needless problems -- apart from mis-understanding possibilities with people on the rest of the planet. Even the US Military uses 24 hr clock based on GMT - I think they've tried to "Colonize it" by calling it UTC or by some other silly even more bonkers name.
Either yyyy/mm/dd or dd/mm/yyyy is easy to handle. Their system is totally crazy as is their temperature (Fahrenheit) based on a Polish guy who used random mixtures of salt and ice blocks in water from dubious sources to determine what the zero was -- and the poor souls can't even get those increasingly disused Imperial measurements right -- ever heard of a US gallon and Pint - and they probably still use "Rods, Poles and Perches" for measuring real estate specifications.

Cheers

In Canada, the English mostly refer to time as let's say 8pm and the French will often use 20 h, which to me is less confusing as I get older. o_O

Try any type of sorting on that text -- February would come before January and April and August would be at the start of the sequence.

I'm not Anti US - US has saved a lot of people's bacon for far longer than most people especially younger ones ever realize in spite of current internal problems over there - but you can't defend the "Indefensible".

Well not just the UK .. but still I don't get the logic there.

In the UK they still use Horsepower as opposed to Nm.. . so lets not throw stones...

As an aside - Dates have always been a problem for junior programmers - it's a lot easier now with .Net formatting but yep - it should be standardised to dd/MM/YYYY
