About a year ago I set up access to my wife’s MS account using ‘Sign in with Google’ instead of her Username and password. At that time, it all worked fine but as we all know corporations like Microsoft are tightening up their security and now it has broken her ability to sign in using ‘Sign in with Google’: -
16/6/2025 - After entering her username and clicking on Continue MS attempts to sign her in using ‘Sign in with Google’ but fails due to the action no longer complying with Google's OAuth 2.0 policy.

Does anyone know a way around this obstacle?
Step by step instructions if possible.

Sign In Google Windows 11​

If you are having trouble signing in to Windows 11 using a Google account, there are several potential causes and solutions to consider. One common issue is related to the Google Credential Provider for Windows (GCPW), which allows users to sign in to their Windows devices using a Google account.8 If GCPW is not functioning correctly, you may encounter issues during the sign-in process.

Ensure that your Google Account is properly configured and that there are no issues with your 2-Step Verification settings.

A potential issue could be related to the settings on your Google account. For example, if IMAP is not enabled in your Gmail settings, you may face difficulties connecting your account to Outlook or other services.4 To resolve this, you can enable IMAP in your Gmail settings by following the steps provided by Microsoft Support.

Additionally, if you are using a work or school account, there might be specific policies in place that affect your ability to sign in. For instance, if the device has a group policy object (GPO) that defines the Log on as batch job policy, it might override the GPO that lets GCPW use a special account to request sign-in details from the user.5 In such cases, you may need to adjust the GPO settings or contact your administrator for assistance.

If you are experiencing issues with the sign-in process, it might also be helpful to check if your device is enrolled in Microsoft Entra ID. Web sign-in is not supported for Microsoft Entra hybrid joined or domain joined devices, so this could be a contributing factor.6

If you continue to experience issues, you may need to troubleshoot further by checking for any recent updates or changes to your system, ensuring that your device is connected to the internet, and verifying that your Google account is functioning correctly. If all else fails, you may need to consider a system reset or a clean install as a last resort.

Not enough info here an I'm kinda confused. Are your trying to sign into Windows using a gmail account OR are you referring to email? If it's email, what app are you using or does she use gmail on the web?

what app are you using when your signing in?

This error is related to for example, an old email app that is trying to sign you in with outdated security protocols. As in the app itself is not passing the new security requirements to forward the creds to the provider.

It should work to sign in with a browser.

For older apps that dont support 2fa, there are things called app passwords that you can create.

My wife doesn't use authenticator apps to sign in anywhere. She is not tech savvy enough.
I realise there are two options to choose another way to sign in for her so I am going to look into those when I have time. See photo.

I decided to try it and clicked on 'Can't access your account?' and followed the prompts that followed to change her PW. This was successful but when I went to sign in to her MS account MS still pushes you to 'Sign in with Google' and this resulted in the same problem.
I clicked on the 'Back' icon and this time I clicked on 'Use a different way to sign in' and opted to sign in using her new PW. Microsoft then test you to see that you are not a robot. Having passed that test they then send security codes to confirm it is really you. Then I was able to access her account.

At least I know now how to get access and to avoid 'Sign in with Google'.

If you have the Microsoft Authenticator app on your Smart Phone, when you click Forgot Password, it sends the code to the Authenticator app. You just tap the corresponding numbers shown on the phone and the computer. No tech skills needed.
As long as you know how to authenticate thru email, you are good.

Thanks. Yes, I do have it on my phone so I'll try that out.

Edit: @Spunk - I wonder if the MSA app needs to be on my wife's phone? I know MS have her phone registered in her account. I'll try it on my phone first and if I have to then I will put it on her phone.
I am basically the Administrator for anything technical for my wife so I am reluctant to add any complications to her phone. She might delete the app accidentally and lose any tokens. Using my phone is easier.

If you have the Microsoft Authenticator app on your Smart Phone
MS don't show an option to sign in using an Authenticator app.
If I elect to sign in another way I am offered the options as photo1
If I click on 'I forgot my password' I am offered the options as photo2.

It doesn't matter though. As long as I can access her MS account if needed via email and SMSs then that's okay.
