Solved Can PROGRAMS be shared from Win10 to Win11?

Hi:

I am an absolute NOVICE to PC networking; please be kind!

I am confused by what I have been reading up on about Networking my (Old & failing) windows 10 machine with my newly acquired windows 11 home, 24H2, Build 26.100.4061.

So, my first question is: Is it possible to network these two PCs such that I am able to access, and execute a Program that exists on my win10 machine from my win11 machine?

I have read comments and viewed several YouTube videos about Networking Windows 11 PCs. I have one win11 and one win10 desktops here.
Everything seems to be addressing "Files sharing" and/or "Folders sharing". But, as yet, I have not come across anything in context of sharing and executing a "Program".

My goal is, if possible, to access Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe program, which is presently installed on the win10 DELL desktop.

I still have an original Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe CD disc; however, at present, the win10 machine's optical drive is Not recognized by win10; a separate problem. (Although, I was able to write to the DVD R-W drive within the Picasa program!)

What I have done thus far is to connect each PC via Ethernet cable to my Verizon FiOS router. This has allowed me to use File Explorer>Network to view the directory tree of the win10 PC from the win11 PC, and be able to cut/copy and then paste into a file folder on the win11 PC. (Not sure if I am able to go the route: from win11 to win10.)

Your comments & suggestions on how to proceed will be appreciated. Thanks for reading this.

Some programs are known as portable apps, that is you can copy the program's folder to anywhere on a local PC, a removable USB drive, or a network share and all the functionality works fine. MS Money is not one of them. When you installed it, Money also created a set of registry entries to help itself run and may have installed other required files on the W10 machine.

Just because you network mount, or even copy the folders exactly to the W11 PC, it won't necessarily run. An install on the W11 machine is required.

If you really need to run Money, you can check if the W10 PC is running Pro. A W11 Home PC can run Remote Desktop into a W10 Pro PC so you have a remote user session, whenever you need to use Money.

It was my understanding back when 11 came out that Money would not work in 11 but folks were able to open Money files in Money Plus Sunset. However it has no on-line features.

You might consider to buy an external CD/DVD reader/writer that is connecting over USB.
Just had a look for their cost (I don't live in the USA):
Should be somewhere between $20 and $40, and there still is a massive choice!
In the past I had some troubles using my internal DVD-writer and bought me such an external drive.
Although they write somewhat slower it is a very nice solution for not having an internal CD/DVD drive anymore.

not sure if this is of any help. a download ISO of MS Money 2003.
you can place this ISO on to a USB drive then install it on the required system

I know that we are starting to wander a bit from the main issue here, but since the discussion went in the direction of the optical drive, I just wanted to point out an excellent little free program that has been around a long time now: Paragon Net Burner 2.0. Old program but super useful. It allows you to share any optical drive from one machine to another machine. To the machine without the optical drive, it looks just as if the drive is attached locally and you can use any program you would normally use to read or write to that optical media.

I have a desktop with a Blu-ray writer, but I use it from my laptop as if it was a local drive.

Just do a web search for "Paragon Net Burner" and you will find it.

Actually not true if you can connect to the W10 machine from W11 via RDP -- that assumes though the W10 machine is running W10 Pro though.
W11 Home edition allows RDP from another machine as a CLIENT so that shouldn't be a problem.

You could use a commercial solution though if W10 is HOME edition such as AnyDesk -- I don't recommend the other one that a lot seem to use -- Teamviewer though. Might be other methods too -- I haven't investigated those though.

An alternative if you have a working DVD reader on another PC would be to make an ISO file from the disk and use that on the Win10 PC. I use AnyBurn for that.

A tip: I store Portable versions of programs on my NAS drive and any Windows computer can run them as long as I Map the folder in File Explorer. There's no install routine for them, just double-click their .exe file. Some older 32-bit programs can be done that way, have Claris Works 5 from 1997 and DeltaCAD from 2000.

Some programs have been made available such as LibreOffice, Firefox, Notepad++, Games etc. The Apps tab on www.portableapps.com gives a good list.

The win10 PC is home version. I've yet to upgrade the win11 Home to win11 Pro; I have a Key from DELL.

Yes, I have considered buying an external DVD R/W drive. There are so many to select from. I suppose that I should go with a DELL product, and will ask them which model is recommended for my XPS-8960.

I personally think any external drive from a reliable make will do.
I for instance bought a Samsung drive, but that was quite long ago, so it still is USB2.0.
If I would do it again, it would be a USB3.0 version, maybe it will be somewhat faster.

BTW. Would you please like not to write all text in bold? In forums that is considered to be as shouting.
Bold is just to emphasize words, not to use for all text.
