Cannot associate file type with this program

Just did a fresh OS install and installed all latest updates and for some reason I cannot open the following files .xml .json or .dat with Notepad anymore when I used to do that just fine.

I tried setting Notepad as the default app for those formats from either right-click open with and finding the .exe for Notepad or by going to Settings>Apps>Default apps, both gave me this error:

I don't that I’d ever do that.

When opening system files like the ones you have mentioned, it’s best to right click and use Open With, then selecting only once, until you can sort out why using the context menu Edit with Notepad isn’t working

But I don’t think i’d be changing the association of system files.


Until then, try using Notepad++ which is built for editing those types of files in a text editor. And there is no need to associate those files with a text editor. The context menu should be adequate.

go to each one of the files and right click the file
then click open with
open each file in your default browser.

see if the files open then.

I think that this advice worked before: Notepad removed from Accessories and associations deleted.
