Hi, all! Newbe here to the group.

"Trying" to be Being brief... LT4 and LT5 on a home WIFI network. Both Machines are Win 11. LT4 is win 10 to win 11 upgraded. LT5 is a recent new win 11. Both PCs have WWW access. Both PCs have WIFI to shared WIFI printer.

Problem ? - I CAN access (link a directory) on LT4 FROM LT5 but I CANNOT access LT5 from LT4 ?? I BOTH machines do NOT show the other on the local network even though the linking of a directory to LT4 from LT5 has occurred. WTF?? Yes I checked all the normal stuff.... Net discovery on, turn of file and printer sharing in private net., turned off password protected sharing, etc. Been searching for this for a week or so now and did not see anything I have not tried.

Any thoughts before I end up teaching my LT4 how to swim ???

Thanks All !!

Have you setup shares and can your connect via IP ie \\192.168.1.3\sharename

Sharing is setup on both machines. I cannot ping192.168.1.3. I'm connected through FIOS

That shouldn't make a difference. Internet is internet for that purpose.

Anyway, perhaps if you told us what specifically you wanted to do when viewing PC's on the network we can help? Though I'm not going to claim expert here, so...

One thing I will say is ALL PC's need to be setup the same Network wise to view each from the other. Example if you have Network Discovery on for LT4, but not for LT5 that's an issue. Or if one PC is in private network mode, and the other is in public mode that's also a problem.

Let us know :)

Ok Bottom Line.
I have two Laptops.
I have one which is my "Main" and the other is just for browsing/research/ shopping.
I Keep all my files on LT4. I want to be able to save internet info (Downloads, research, receipts, etc.) to LT4. If I'm on LT4 I want o be able to access LT5 and pull my files. IF I'm on LT5, I want to be able to push them on LT4. Right now I only have it one way. LT5 can read and write to LT4, but not vice versa.

Don't blame poor old LT4 because the problem is PROBABLY on LT5 if it's not showing in the network map. In file explorer on both computers under network, both should be listed.
1. On LT5, open command prompt and type ipconfig /all Make note of the ipv4 address listed under your wireless adapter.

2. Go to LT4 computer. Open File Explorer. In the address bar type the ip address you found in step 1. If it shows the shared files on LT5, that proves file sharing is set up correctly. Even if the PC doesn't show on the network, you can use this method to access the files and get your work done until you find a permanent fix..
NOTE: FYI I have one computer on my network that no matter what I did, it would never show in the network map so I used this method to access it for a long time. I later had to do a repair install on it and it began to show in the map.
You can also make a shortcut to this ip connection and pin it to your quick access for easy access. But let's see if we can get LT5 to show in the network map.
.

Do the following steps on both computers, starting with LT5. After you do steps 3-8 check sharing. If you still can't share, do steps 3-8 on LT4.

3. Run network troubleshooter. Settings-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-shared folders RUN

4. In search box type services. In search results click Services app. In services find Function Discovery Provider Host. Change the Startup type to Automatic. Click on Apply and OK. Start the service. Restart the service it if it is already started.

5. Do the same thing for Function Discovery Resource Publication service.

6. Reset network components. (Note, this will change the ip address assigned to the computer unless you have assigned it a static ip address)
Open command prompt as administrator. Type each of these commands one at a time hitting enter after each one.
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

7. While in command prompt set a firewall rule by typing netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Network Discovery" new enable=Yes.
Close command window.

8. In search box type windows features. In search results click Turn Windows features on and off. Look for SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support and check the checkbox next to it. Also, expand SMB 1.0 and check if all the checkboxes under it are ticked. Click on OK.
Restart computer.

See if both computers show in network map.
If not, on the computer that cannot be seen on the network from administrative command prompt type sfc /scannow. If System File Checker log shows anything that can't be repaired, report back here.

After doing all this, if you still can't see both computers in your network map, I can't suggest anything but doing step 1 again to find LT5's new ip address and accessing it that way if you can.

You can always share a drive and then map it to your other PC's. Add permissions and users to it and you can do just about anything. That of course assumes all PC's are seen on the network. That said, there are some preparations that need done first - Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10

Anyway, here I have shared my E-drive (Photos and named the share "Photography") from my main rig (DRU21).

Shared E-drive.png

Looking at "Network" on the backup PC (KIDS) you can see "DRU21" and clicking on it shows my shared drive "Photography"...

My Network.png

On the "KIDS" PC the drive is mapped as shown under "Network locations". Map Network Drive in Windows 10

Mapped E drive.png

The big thing is making sure all the PC's are setup the same network wise. BTW you might also consider the Remote Desktop option - Enable or Disable Remote Desktop Connections to Windows 10 PC

There's also the One Drive option. Great for sharing files between PCs. I use this daily. Download a file on one PC, drop it in OneDrive and access the file on my other PC. Whatever is in the OneDrive folder on one PC can be accessed from another PC. It's basically a shared folder.
Hope this helps? :)

OK I fixed it. I really did not change anything - except change both my LT4, LT5 from my 5g wifi connection to 2g connection. Both LT4 And LT5 suddenly appeared in my file explorer network folders. When I changed back to 2G they were still there. I rebooted both - still there! Reconnected to 5g - Still there ! WTF? I have seen flaky issues the the net software before ..... I changed nothing in either network config! Buggy Win 11 Network discovery??? Oh Well.

So - My original issues is resolved. I can xfer files both ways between my laptop PCs. I now also can see each other PC in each PC's network in file explorer !!!

Thanks All!

Final (bonus?) Question ... Why can I see my own computer in my file explorer network window on only ONE computer? i.e. LT4 shows in network LT5 AND LT4. On LT5 file explorer only shows LT4.

I can't answer your bonus question, but will only say ALL my PC's show in explorer from any PC viewed, example post #9

As for Windows networking and weirdness, that's the nature of the beast as anything can throw a monkey wrench into things. With that, I thank you for posting back and explaining what the issue was. Now I know to add Wi-Fi to the mix of potential issues. BTW, my main rig is hard-wired, and my other PCs are Wi-Fi 5G.

Thanks, and glad you got the issue solved.
