Yes John mate it was pure luck that the Asus support fellow had researched my motherboard via the serial number of my machine and found that I had been looking at the wrong model number as I was only aware that on the back of the machine the model number was quite wrong.

Rather surprised they don't allow the user to look it up via serial number directly. I prefer that method, where available, and other builds specific information (like Dell's Service Tags) for finding direct info.

At least you can create a login and then save the machine info there, so it's always the right one. I've gotten to the point where some things I just don't remember very well - like the old 1080p monitors I had. I must have taken the picture of the back sticker on them a dozen times in the 9 years I used them to find information about / drivers for them. lol.

Yes John I agree with that as it would avoid such mistakes being made as when I used the model number off of the back of my machine, which I also think they should put the correct model number anyway. I mean there is a lot of difference between X712F and X712FAC eh?

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Well, to be fair, it could also be simple human error, and someone swapped two labels on 2 side by side machines while they were being assembled.

Or, it could also be that the machine was initially supposed to be an F model and at the last second was changed to FAC - and they simply forgot to replace the sticker.

I mean, sure, if every single one out there in customers' hands had the same issue, sure, they were smoking something. But we only know of this one instances, and the fact that it took the ASUS support this long to verify by serial number that the sticker was wrong indicates that this is a not a large widespread issue.

Well it isn't exactly a label more a faint print of the model number on the plastic bottom case probably machine done the only actual label is just the serial number.

This is why I think users should leave updating software installed on laptops, instead of buying into the "bloatware" mentality.

With Lenovo's Vantage software the product (model) number and serial number is recorded in the software so that it gets correct drivers and BIOS updates specific to the laptop and installs them. Takes the guesswork out of the equation.
