Hi all,

I'm finding I can't cast to a TV from my Win 11 laptop, either via Settings > System > Display > Connect to a wireless display or via Windows + K. I'm trying on a Samsung S95BA TV at present as that's what's where I am at the mo, but I've also failed with an LG TV.

Each time I try, Windows appears to be connecting; I get a message to follow the instructions on the TV; I OK the connection in the TV dialogue; I get a message on the TV with the laptop name and 'connecting', and the 'Cast' dialogue on the laptop says connecting; after about 30 seconds the TV message disappears, but without establishing a connection; after another 10 - 20 seconds the 'Cast' dialogue says 'Couldn't connect'.

I feel as though I've tried about every solution on the internet, without success:

- Computer and TV are on the same network

- Display and laptop support Miracast as far as I can tell, and I have successfully cast to this TV using the previous Asus laptop

- WiFi and Bluetooth are on

- Wireless display is available in 'Optional Features'

- Cast to device functionality is allowed in the firewall, and I've tried with the firewall off

- Network discovery is switched on, and I've tried with file sharing enabled and disabled

- I can connect to the TV and display / stream hardwired using HDMI

- Device drivers for networking and WiFi are up to date

- I've tried allowing all devices under media streaming options

- I did have Proton VPN installed, but only running on demand / manually; I've tried disabling and uninstalling it

- I did have Norton 360 installed (trial that came with the laptop) but I've uninstalled it

- Microsoft LLDP Protocol Driver is checked in adaptor settings

- Removed wireless / connected devices and re-added them (several times!)

- Tried changing WiFI frequency 5 GHz > 2.4 GHz and back

- Restarted laptop after settings changes

Not sure if I've missed something, not done something correctly, barking up the wrong tree or what. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Is it nothing happens or do you get an error message?

As above - the TV says <laptop name> and 'connecting', then nothing happens; the laptop says 'connecting', waits until the TV's stopped trying, then after a few seconds says 'Couldn't connect'.

Thanks for the link, but I have tried the options on that page without success, unfortunately.

For Miracast certifications for both products and/or Wireless Cards go to:

Assuming you actually have the Intel Wireless Card as specified in the MSI Laptop specs, then it does not have Miracast, and the Intel specs do not mention Miracast, however details seem sparse.
Go thru the same exercise with the TVs.

Hello Helmut, thanks.

I hadn't considered the wireless card itself, as it appeared to be talking to the TV but then failing to set up the screen share, rather than not talking at all.

According to Device Manager the wireless adaptor is 'Killer Wi-Fi 7 BE1750w 320MHz Wireless Network Adapter (BE200D2W)'. I can't find that on the wi-fi.org site at all, and Intel information is vague as you suggest. However it seems to support Wireless Direct.

Following that thread a little further, I've found some sites that suggest running dxdiag and searching the results for Miracast support. Doing so suggests the wireless adaptor does support Miracast, but I also get the result "Miracast: Not Supported by Graphics driver".

A list I found on the Intel site suggests Arc doesn't support Miracast, though it is a page referring to Windows 8.1 so could be out of date. It's difficult to understand why this would be, though, as the key support needed seems to be WDDM 1.3 or better and this supports WDDM 3.1, and the Intel site also suggests Intel have stopped supporting MIracast as it's now native in Windows.

At least it's a thread I can pull on, and I suppose might explain the behaviour (to my simple mind)

TVs are no problem, I have cast to them before from other devices.

I've posted the question, with specific reference to the graphics card, on the Intel support forum, so we'll see what happens. I don't expect any response for a couple of days though.

So ... not a lot of help from Intel, bar a reposting of the out of date "Frequently Asked Questions about Intel® Graphics Drivers Support for Miracast*"

"Upon further review of the issue you reported, we have determined that it falls outside the scope of our support" - no explanation as to why they think that, or answers to my questions about Intel vs. native Windows support for Miracast. I've asked for more detail but no reply.

Bit disappointing really. I have one clue to this which may or may not be correct, but nowhere to go with it. Microsoft next, I suppose.

According to the Samsung S95B specs it supports WiFi5. What band are you trying to connect with? Is it 5GHz?
How far is your laptop and TV from the router?

I have two Samsung TVs. I can connect to them fine using the 5GHz band.
Samsung RU7100 43" 4K UHD TV (2019)
Samsung Q70D 55" 4K QLED TV (2024)

When I try to connect to my TVs a message appears on my TVs asking to allow the connection. I have to use the TV remote and select Allow or the connection will abort. Even though my laptop and TV are less than 15' from my router the connection sometimes fails. However, the vast majority of the time it succeeds.

Both my laptops can connect to both my Samsung TVs using Miracast:

My Laptop has the Intel AX211 wireless card which appear to be parallel to the Killer series, both being Intel.
The technical details from Intel for your card suggest no Miracast support.
So it is not the Arc graphics as my Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics does not support Miracast either.
From DxDiag:
Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics
Miracast: Not Supported by Graphics driver

Your references also show that 3 series of Integrated Intel Graphics are involved, no support.

All references show no support, that is it.

Hi Helmut, thanks.

I'm not sure that's the whole story though, or I'm missing something. I'm not seeing the references you're seeing. I get the same DxDiag message as you; but if it is the integrated graphics, why wouldn't Intel just say that, instead of referring me to MIcroosoft?

Agreed the Intel FAQ does not include Iris XE or Arc, and it's said to have been updated in December; but the laptop I had previously cast to both these TVs without problem and it had Iris XE graphics, which aren't included on that list and which you say aren't supported and don't cast on your device.

There is also the suggestion, and I can't find it again now, that Intel Miracast support ended because it's now native on Windows, which would tie in with the Microsoft thing.

I'm just not seeing anything that I can really pin down as definitive, and I'd like to before I give up!
